Folks,

Just a general news item and an invitation for folks who aren't aware of OpenCut.

THANK YOU for making the OpenCut experiment a huge success!

During OpenCut 1 we had 51 editors submit completely different versions of the same RED project. If our efforts with our Guinness application are successful, this will set a world record for the most number of cinematic cuts of a project based on a single set of source material.

Carsten Kurpanek won OpenCut 1 and is the recipient of a brand new AJA Io HD along with a week rental of RED ONE #21 and all the trimmings.

OpenCut 2 is open for registration. All the information is posted at www.OpenCut.org and we encourage you to join the discussion in the REDUser OpenCut forum here:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=46

OpenCut 3 is being shot August 5th & 6th and competition for OC3 commence in September.

I can't figure out how to view the winners...can we view the winners? Maybe a sticky with some quick links?

I don't have time to enter this, but I would sure like to follow along at home.

Folks,
If our efforts with our Guinness application are successful, this will set a world record for the most number of cinematic cuts of a project based on a single set of source material.

It's a great PR idea - but, realistically, film schools will do this a lot. Sometimes they use footage from studio movies (with permission or movies that the teacher had edited) and will use the same footage for years on end 3 or 4 different classes during the year...

...but... maybe Guinness won't think of that :)

Hi Mark,
That's the first thing I thought when I read this thread..I did the same thing in film school with black and white footage from an old western; there where way more than 52 of us.

Alex,

I guess the distinction would be the quality of the media and the creative challenge.

First--since its .R3D from the start, its totally pristine no matter if we have 5, 50, or 500 people working on it.

Second, the winner of OpenCut actually becomes the editor of record in IMDB. I think this is an important distinction. "Susannah" will forever be known now as directed by Evan Nicholas, and cut by Carsten Kurpanek.

Important distinction: You probably won't be seing any of those student cuts at film festivals...
