  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Open source camera

That's very cool. Not direct competition for RED (more interesting to software/hardware developers and not suitable for real production right now) but very cool for hackers. Thanks!

I know this one, I was one of the first people over at the dvinfo projects to contact Elphel about making a cinema camera. Somebody else actually got them on board sometime latter.

I haven't kept up with what was happening, but it was like watching clumpy paint dry, took forever, and we had new naive people that were action like de-artifacting 70mb/s mpeg1 HD footage was wonderful :( . The sensors were basically simular to the ones now used in near $100US HD cameras. Tried to steer them towards a very light simple compression scheme that used estimated pixels, which turns out to be a little like what they do in texture compression in directx 3D graphics (which achieve substantial compression).

Since then they moved to a camera that could record raw, better sensors and towards raw compression routines.

If you have a look over at dvinfo alternative imaging forums you will find many minor projects, and also the original Sumix camera company's Altasens camera that is another DIY project. The SI camera also comes out of this, and we got SI and cine form together, who were there from near the beginning. I have not kept up with what is happening in their camp now, but unfortunately, because of their own attitude, Red was teaching them a lesson, and I say that as a person that advised them to get together after I was personally asked for my advice as to what to do. Very disappointing, and from a clear mind back then, inevitable. I could secretly call as to how and when projects would fail, if you think I am wrong, it is not about the past I am talking about, but the future.

Unless you play ball, how long can you hold out against a company with the resources and talent of Red, without releasing competitively priced products.
