open r3d in quicktime

You need to open the QT proxie, not the actual R3D file itself.

Output reference quicktimes with RedAlert. The R3D file and the quicktime must reside in the same folder in order for the reference file to link to the R3D source file.

I'm having a similar problem. When I open the QT Proxy the QT Player says I need to download additional software, but I already have the REDCODE.QT.Component installed. Is it because I'm on OS X 10.3.9 and/or on a G5? I'm using QT 7.3.

REDCODE and the R3D QT component as well as REDCINE and RED Alert are Intel only.

I'm a PC guy, but I have a Mac client on a current project. He has a G5.

Is there anything he can do with his G5 to convert the .R3D files I give to him at the end of the shoot?

Unfortunately, no. As far as R3D files go (as well as the QT proxies), the G5 architecture is dead in the water. It kills me here too.. I had two G5 Quad-core systems, actually still have one that I'm typing on right now.

he can buy a cheapo $300-500 pc to use as redcine slavestation for his G5, some of our clients decided to go that route.
