I was wondering if there is any rhyme or reason to the HDMI out of the RED. It seems to be very temperamental and I am completely puzzled by it. I mainly was using it as a client monitor and sometimes it would work and sometimes it would not. It was a crapshoot. If I turned on the camera it would work, but when I turned off the camera and then back on I would sometimes get picture or sometimes not. 7 out of 10 it would work...but what a headache.

Anyone has HDMI woes?

Yes I did..many times. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it would not. i went to the menu options also and switched from DVI menus to 720 and that would sometimes make it work...but there was not a clear reason as to why it would work or not...

oh and the weirdest was...I had the EVF and the RED monitor connected with all menus showing and sometimes when I was plugging and unplugging the HDMI cable, I would get the signal on the HDMI monitor with ALSO all menus also enabled...I thought you could not have all three showing all the menu data on screen...

Red One hdmi was always that way... HD-SDI to HDMI converter off the ET breakoput box eliminates that problem and is less than $1000 fix.

Anyone have any ballpark figures as to what it would cost to fix a non-functioning HDMI port? Mine doesn't seem to be working at all.. Is it worth fixing if it'll just be temperamental?

Hello,

If you search threads you will find many on this subject. Yes, i spend a few weeks chasing the iffy operation. I tested various cables and lengths, different monitors, involved suppliers and even Red service. Although it is an HDMI connector, it does not reflect the HDMI spec. In the case of using a SmallHD, I can get it to work everytime if I use the same cable and the same order of start-up BUT if another shooter uses my Red and does not, it is a pain getting it back working. I can use a SmallHD on the HDMI, and a Bomb and and LCD display no problem but I must follow the same method each time. Keep in mind, you must have the Red set-up properly too.

My two cents.

A simple right angle adapter cut down on most of my HDMI monitor woes.

I have a SmallHD DP6 and it is the same situation....it works great...but if I have to turn on and off the camera....when powered back on, it is a crap shoot if the monitor turns back on. Everyone on set has an opinion as to what will work and what will not...sequence of connecting items, ways of powering down each item..etc. etc. There is no science to it....

Let me know if you are always chasing your tail on this. Ours is solid for me so I can let you know my process. I already put the time into research so I might as well save somebody the heartache!

I would love to hear about your process.....we have so many theories and formulations of why and how this happens that it is almost ridiculous. All I know is that I don't think the the HDMI is faulty....reading other threads gives me the assumption that the HDMI has been pretty 'wonky" since the beginning.

Mine has been rock solid since the beginning. I know sometimes I need to "reboot" the monitors that are connected to it but that's about it. Nothing on the camera side.

We have not had the first issue with HDMI on our RED One and we constantly use it with a 30' HDMI cable. Rock solid, indeed!
