shooting my first project with the red camera, have worked with 35mm for many years and with hd in the last couple of years. my question is that i wanna do some onset color correction as reference for the post house but you don't really get realistic color representation on a macbook pro so would there be value in sending the dvi from the macbook to another monitor i have a 17" - Panasonic BT-LH1700W on set any help would be great.

It will definitely be better than the macbook monitor, and I use 8bit display to grade when I don't have a choice. Just remember that DVI is 8bit, so keep in mind that you might see banding in the image coming out of the macbook that will not be there when viewing in 10bit SDI.

Occansionally, I have chats with my clients about the look of the project. I use SpeedGrade On Set for "defining" a look on set. I find it sensible to commicate color on set but the final grade will be some how different in the most cases, at least differ a bit.

For a final grade, you need time (hardly availabe on set), a specifically designed room and last but not least the soundtrack of the film to get the full idea/feeling of what you are doing. Therefore, a fully equipped grading suite on set will be an overkill anyway. I find the monitor of a MBPro not too bad for evaluation a rough grade, assumed the monitor is set to gamma 2.2.

If a second monitor is need (audience is bigger than 3) I would go with a calibrated Eizo 24 inch. Good value for the money and kinda pro with a third of the costs of a Cinetal.

I'm not sure weather your 17" inch Panasonic is the same that I get from my rental house (waveform monitor, HDSDI in, 2-3 years old). But if we talk about the same monitor than I must say that the Panasonic 17" has weak blacks and is IMO worse than any MBPro screen.

Iridas Speedgrade On-Set is such fantastic tool for me both as grading on-set and LUT creation for input into my Red using the look menu. Does require file-naming convention for Red look input.

I desperately want the new HP Dream Color for on-set even though I know i have a 8-bit graphics card.:ranting2:

I'm Currently building a 10-bit Viewing Data Cart for minor grading/monitoring and raw data capture for up to 8TB (Raid 0) for feature length data capture. A daunting task. Cooling and Power are the really critical issues along with DUST!

Anyone rocking a phat cart set-up?
