Hi all-

I've just returned from a job where one of the fans on the top of my Weapon has stopped spinning on the second of three days. I got an error message
saying "one of the fans is not spinning at the required speed" or something to that effect. It still seemed to function fine and my T/E stayed green the
whole time. Unfortunately I have two more shoot days scheduled before I can take it in to Irvine. Neither should be in excessive heat. Anyone know if
the camera can function properly on only one fan? I know it's not ideal obviously but would it be damaging in any way? I'll file a ticket with Red as soon
as I can but wanted to get people's opinion in the meantime.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

As long as the T/E meters are green, than the sensor is fine. But there's more to the camera than just the sensor.

I would be more worried about damaging the fan motor, and by proxy other electronics inside the camera, by forcing it to run when clearly something is wrong.

And absolute worst case scenario would be something like the jammed fan motor gets superheated by the friction and heat and catches fire. Which is probably unlikely, but definitely something to be worried about with any jammed mechanics that still have power running through it.

Check to see if the non-functioning fan turns freely by physically moving it. If it seems jammed, then look to see if there is something stuck in it that can be removed to free it up.
If the fan physically turns freely, then it is probably electronics that is causing the fan to not run.
Also check the electrical contacts to make sure they are clean.

Since you've only got two shooting days before sending it into Irvine, you may be able to survive, but I wouldn't do it for my personal camera, so I can't, in good faith, recommend it to you.

Is renting a spare brain a possibility?

Daniel: It is my understanding that the fan module is a user replaceable part. However, I have never removed one.
Somewhere on the Red site there should be instructions on how to take it off.

We had the same thing happened on a Weapon Mg, we took off the top piece and then took off the fan, then we put it back together and it started working fine, seems maybe there was a small rock that went inside or something. Now they both work good.

We took it apart ourselves, took us 30 mins, no screws if i remember correctly.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Just a quick update. My AC took a flashlight and looked down into the fans. He spotted a long strand of hair (probably mine) and pulled it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. After that, the
fan started spinning like normal. Seems that the hair had maybe gotten wrapped around the fan and stopped it spinning (?).. Anyways, shot with it for two days since then and everything is working like fine. Maybe I'll have
to start wearing a hair net while I operate. :/

Glad that you figured it out and that your camera didn't explode!

And my hair has been getting kind of long. Maybe I should look into a hair net too! Lol! :)
