A cool little One-Take music video I DP'd/Shot for Tiffany Alvord. She's so incredibly humble and sincere and was an absolute blast to work with.

Was a single day shoot. Didn't close down the street, so we were constantly battling traffic which made it a challenge. We only had like an hour or so to shoot it once we started rolling since we were utilizing the sun and needed it to get low enough in frame to not cause mad/ugly flare. Shot in HDRX to help retain some sky detail, and we just bounced the sun with shiny-boards/checkerboards. We were a little limited since we couldn't really go into the street or run mobile generators during the track, so couldn't really have any mobile lighting. I used an HMI inside the little shop's main entrance, then another one at her stage performance and used a kino as fill there as well.

In order to keep up with her, I sat on my mobile cart and had the DIT pull me since at several points through the song she skips and then gets on a skateboard. I tried many times to keep up with her walking backwards, but it just wasn't working at all, so I enlisted the DIT to pull me on my cart, which saved my legs!!! We ran it about 6-7 times, and the 4th take is what they used.

Choreography took most of the set time as there were a lot of people that had to be incorporated. All the people throughout the tracking shot are the same people listening to her performance at the end, so they had to book it right after camera cleared them.

All in all, was a fun shoot that we pulled off. One-takes are always difficult, this one especially since it covered so much ground, but it was great to be a part of.

Shoot Details:
Shot on Epic MX
Contax Zeiss Glass
MoVI M10
Tiltamax Armorman Support Exo
Cinegears Wireless Follow Focus
Paralinx Triton for monitoring
Zero post-stabilization used in the edit
Just did a quick grade in Davinci

Nice work

Chris I'm always amazed at what you do, and how you improvise, to make real movie magic.

This was GREAT!!

There's a lot of art direction and coordination going here too - super cool!

So you're just getting pushed on a DIT cart? Is that how you got around? That's so insane!

You crazy for this one Chris!!!

AWESOME JOB!

PS - what focal length? 35 2.8?

best

Shot on EPIC MX....the frames are just so yummy :)

Love it Chris, simply great work!

Wow, Chris. Great work man! I can't even imagine the amount of planning and timing that went into this. It looks fantastic! You Know I LOVE YOUR Stuff. It's always good to see your work.

Thanks so much Nick...you're always way too kind to me hehe. I was getting pulled on my utility cart which made the job doable. I popped off once the camera pans around after Tiffany gives the lady change to put in her meter. Once we head inside, that hallway was so incredibly tight, especially at the end where the gate was sort of blocking the doorway. That, coupled with the steps up into the stage area made that the most challenging bit to get through.

Yup, shot on the 35. I wanted to go to the 50, but that interior space was just too small.

This is MAGIC.

Thanks Brandon!

I know right...love my trusty MX. Thanks for the compliment Eric.

Appreciate the praise Adam. Yea, it was crazy amount of planning, though I wasn't really involved at all until I was on set haha. Walked the route several times with the director to figure out what was doable, camera framing, etc. Call time was 8am and we didn't start rolling until a little after 5pm. All that time was for the choreography and blocking. We only had an hour or so to get the shot once we started to roll...I wanted that sun nice and low peaking through the trees, and we were limited with the amount of takes we could do, so the pressure was def'n on!

great job chris really well choreographed all flowed quite naturally

Thanks Tobias. Yea, the choreography was definitely well thought out. The team had ideas about how they wanted Tiffany to traverse through the streets, and it was just a matter of execution and camera composition once I was there on set.

Literally the only bad thing about this video was funky HDRx blending artifacts (which is fixable in post with motion blur effects, still PITA). Everything else is just love.

That was great! Kudos to focus puller. love the look you got from it. Nice colors.

Thanks Vadim. Yea, I am by no means a colorist, and I spent very little time in Davinci blending the 2 tracks. The main music video version on youtube didn't have any grades done to it, so I decided to do my own version with a slight grade and access the HDRX. On Tiffany's channel version, it seemed they even pushed the A track a bit in exposure, which completely wiped all detail in the sky, and they didn't really have a grade at all, since that's essentially what the A track looked like straight from camera.

Here's that version:

Thanks Steve...he lost it a couple times during the track, but did a great job overall. It was a long take with constant distance changes, so yea, he deserves cred. hehe

Nice. Really love the 35. I have the mmj 1.4. Such a beautiful lens. Really nice grade, soft and great skin.

Thanks Jake. I think a true colorist could have made it even better, but I think I got a decent look. Yea, Contax are the best lenses ever! Hehe

Nice work!

Man that BTS was fun to watch :)

No mishaps?

Thanks Eric. We rolled a total of about 7 takes, the 4th one is the one used. Luckily, no mishaps with the cart. Ran it a few times without recording when I decided we had to use the cart in order to keep up with Tiffany. My legs were killing me after about 10 practice runs, so I was like...what can I use? Thought of my cart. We bagged the other end of the cart and used an A-clamp for extra security. Worked like magic!
