downloaded our shoot from the weekend. when I open up the files to download onto my editing timeline, I notice that some of the files had 2 or 4 same clips in it? Is that the norm or did I have something set in the camera to give duplicate clips?

The files are segmented. They are not the same. When the clip goes over 4GB, the camera starts a new file. Your video editor should see them as one clip.
