On youtube in 4K.
This is how the other half lives. We shot this music video all on my Red Dragon. It is for the band called One-Eyed Doll for a song called "Afflicted" and it is about 9mins long. We shot it in the aftermath of Winter Storm Juno up in the Boston area. We use both OLPFs. The opening scene was lit mostly by candle light with a small china ball in the distance on a dimmer. Shot with Contax Zeiss, Duclos Cine-Moded lenses.
The Dragon has no problem with cold, blizzard conditions. It just takes a minute to reach the operating temperature. I do find that I was keeping the camera on between short setups, just to maintain the proper temperature, rather than what I would normally do, which is to turn it off to save some juice. Of course, We were still keeping the camera protected from snow damage, but when you're in production mode, you need it to have a ruggedness. And being made out of machined metal, it was like having a tank in battle.
I have to say, being more of a filmmaker and less of a DP, with music video budgets these days I am forced to shoot videos myself, with the RED Dragon I am afforded some forgiveness with what happens on set and shooting in RAW has saved me countless times. Yes you still need good lighting and good lenses and good filters and good camera work. But during this video, we had situations where it was well past sunset, because it was the dead of winter, and we just had to shoot. No choice. Throw on a super fast, buttery smooth 50mm 1.4 prime, pop on the LLOLPF, crank up the ISO, jump out of the van and go. We took that footage into DaVinci and used a little Neat noise reduction and it came out good. Film gods approved.. I know, drives real DPs nuts to say "fix it in post", I get it. But most filmmakers don't have the time or the resources to light an exterior like a cemetery or an entire village.
We have one day to shoot at our location and we have to jump out of the van to get a quick shot and move on to the next.
