  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

On set video assist?

whoa. somehow i skipped over your post. yep, it's all in there. thanks for the info.
one question. are all the outputs active at the same time? both during record/live picture AND during playback? in particular, the HD-SDI out and the composite Feed would be good to know...
cheers.

Hi Skip

Out of curiosity I set up the Red and EX-30 and set the camera to 720/60p and TB of 23.98, 24, 29.97.

The EX-30 can not deal with Project TB 24 and struggles to remain locked on 23.98 and 29.97, however remains stable at Project TB 25 and 720p/50 preview.

No idea why this is but Mike Schell of Covergent Design has tested the Red HD-SDI output and it is way out of SMPTE spec which may explain why the EX-30 struggles to hold synch.

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/convergent-design-flash-xdr/136451-potential-issues-using-red-camera-xdr-nano.html

This may also explain why others have had issues with Blackmagic and other SDI inputs.

I'll edit my original post as not recommended for 720p/60.

Did he elaborate on the "out-of-SMPTE-spec" comment?
That would be good feedback for the Red Team, if the issue could be improved upon.
Cheers,
Harry

thanks rocket. i was actually reading mike's thread over on that site earlier today. it is slightly disconcerting that RED's 720P output seem to be nowhere near spec. i hope someone from the RED team reads Mike's post as per your link, and comments. these card based recorders are going to be very handy in the near future....and it sure would be good if they worked flawlessly with RED, cuz that is what everybody is shooting with...

update....

got an ex30. seems to work fine with red at 4K 2:1 23.98. of course, the output is locked to 720 59.94. so this is a solution for those who need it.

panasonic just announced their version, and eventually, one of these eons, convergent design will release their flash xdr as well. i hope.

I am trying to figure out whats the best video assist option today.:construction:
Although it may seem pretty simple here I shoot my concerns if anyone wants to share how they do it or suggest a better way. Take into account that we generally do commercial work, with clients, diva DoP:innocent: , focus guy, the whole crew.

Now:

*How many monitors do you usually have on set and for what use?
*What kind of cases do you have for these monitors?
*Where do you record your video assist material?

As of now we have one Panasonic 20 inch HDTV, and a Sony 9 inch HDTV.
We plan on recording on a Mini Dv portable deck using a Blackmagic HD-SDI to Analog converter.

It would be nice to see if you could post some of your own imagery on video assists :P
Thanks.

Hello, I don't want to advertise our product in here but, I want you to see a new option of video assist. Our company is working on this video assist for 6 months and I think this one is going to be the first one in film industry. It's name is "Lynx". You can see it from www.mediatechnologies.tv

Interesting product. I've got a few questions though:

----------------

What OS ?

How does Clip logging work? (attachable keyboard? touch screen keyboard?)

What are the exact I/O options? (Is there a Component, SDI or HD-SDI option?)

What kind of compession is used? Is it variable?

Audio outputs show RCA. Will there be a Pro version with XLR?

What size Hard Drive(s)? (Can you replace the drive with your own to upgrade?)

Is the HD set up in a RAID or just by itself? (What kind of redundancy is offered?)

And of course, How much does this cost? :-)

---------

thanks for the info.

First of all, I should say that Lynx Video Assist project started to solve needs of 35mm sets-commercials, movies, music videos. So, it records standard definition.

And your questions:

What OS ?
- Lynx is using "Windows XP Embedded". It has extremely fast start up time and could be instantly power-off without waiting for shutdown process.

How does Clip logging work? (attachable keyboard? touch screen keyboard?)
- There is a touch screen keyboard integrated to software. You could browse all clips in thumbnails.

What are the exact I/O options? (Is there a Component, SDI or HD-SDI option?)
- At the beginning, I should say that Lynx Video Assist project started to solve needs of 35mm sets like commercials, movies, music videos. So, this model records only standard definition.

- 4 channels PAL/NTSC video input (BNC)
- 2 channels audio input (RCA)
- 1 BNC and 1 VGA for Video output.
Also there are digital I/O options:
- 2 USB 2.0 Ports for external HDD and USB Disk connection.
- Network connection (RJ45) for export videos to any LAN computer
- CD/DVD writer to export Vidoes.

What kind of compession is used? Is it variable?
- Compression is Motion JPEG. Compression ratio and resolution is variable.

Audio outputs show RCA. Will there be a Pro version with XLR?
- I could say some hardware configurations depends on customer. It could be also XLR.

What size Hard Drive(s)? (Can you replace the drive with your own to upgrade?)
- There are two storage medias on Lynx. First one is for OS and it is a Solid State Disk (fast and robust). Second one is for video storage and it depends on customer again, in standard configuration we offer 2.5" 320GB SATA HDD. This capacity is fairly enough for SD quality.

Is the HD set up in a RAID or just by itself? (What kind of redundancy is offered?)
- It is not RAID for this model. SATA Disk is fast enough to save videos in Motion JPEG format.

And of course, How much does this cost? :-)
- For the price issue you had to contact to our product manager Sinan SENSIVAS. (sinan@mediatechnologies.tv)

And all the while I thought we were looking at Hi-def units.
Here is what I built 5 years ago. Kind of slow seller- I think the market wasn't ready for it.
3.4 lbs, all-in-one onboard video assist. Mount it on a flexible arm onto the camera. Clip search, slowmo etc.
I also have a 1.8lb, 8'4" monitor / SD card recorder combo. See pics and contact me for PDF manuals if interested.
I have 6 units in stock so for anyone interested I could offer a great deal....

Hi Jacek,

Interesting idea there. Although mounting on the Camera is not an option on Union productions (at least here in Hollywood), as the position of Video Assist is in the Local 695, and not the 600. On these types of productions, there is an operator who works closely with the Director and DP and has a cart setup with a lot of other gear.

Also, the AC's and other Camera crew need to concentrate on their jobs of setting up the next shot and do not usually have the time to be responsible for playing back clips.

I suppose there are several non-union situations where a product like this can be useful, or it can still be operated by a Video Assist Op far from the Camera setup.

Thanks for the info, though. Do you have full specs you can post?

unions and recording

I've ran into the union situation many times in five years. Thank you for explaining it fully- usually I just heard angry video assist operators/union reps telling me it's illegal...
I could send you pdf manuals and such-I couldn't upload them -they are a little too big...
PM me if you want to check them out.
