OLPF V1 Samples

Hi Matt, Thanks for taking the time to post these samples it's been very helpful.
Also, thanks for clearing up the orb VS dot pattern. I had just assumed v1 had replaced the dot patter with the orb, but I can see now those are two different issues.

After extensive testing I simply could not go backwards in terms of lowlight capabilities. I feel like Dragon OLPF 2 is the ultimate Daylight and big budget movie option. But you need a nice lighting budget to avoid all the noise at 800 ISO and beyond. So Injust sent my Scarlet Dragon back to HQ to get the OLPF 1 installed. I actually like the look and texture of the Dragon noise between 800-2000 ISO.....But my clients are not fans. And they want that ultra clean look without doing serious denoising in post.

It is unfortunate because I LOVE the color and highlight roll off and daylight images coming from the OLPF 2. I know I'm going to hate the orbs, but I simply need to higher sensitivity & I'll make it work with the magenta orbs ;)

I have a battle tested Scarlet Dragon coming and I went with OLPF 1 too. I don't care about the orbs for what I'm working on and by the time I'm done the modular upgrade will probably be ready and then it's a non-issue. We can switch between both worlds as needed.

Exactly ;)

P.S. I don't know where everyone gets that the v1 olpf had bad skin tones. They are superior to the MX skintones. I agree that v2 is better for skintones but I don't understand why people say it was so bad when it was better than MX.

Matt,

i think that came from jarred, but also, better color fidelity in general translates to better skin as well.

The sensor is awesome, whichever OLPF you choose. I've just graded a film captured entirely on dragon including some real lowlight sensor starved stuff and I was really happy with the results. I didn't even end up using NR in the lowlight stuff because in motion the grain takes on a nice feel so I just left it. In this case it was a 2k finish. Gong into a grading session later this month on a previous film all captured on MX so will be going "backward" to see, but I already suspect the image won't be as elastic.

5k and 6k to 2k does kill a lot of the "noise". Plus none of the finished shots are zoomed in to 600%. :)
