  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am wondering if those with OLPF v1 would be interested in sharing some samples, or specific links.
Especially interested in how OLPF v1 handles light flares, and low light situations. Specifically interested in exteriors: sunsets, dark woods, high contrast noon day sun, and snow. That's of course a lot to ask, but anything is helpful.

The purpose of the threat is not to debate the merits of OLPF v1 VS OLPF v2, but simply to have some samples on a singe thread to look at.

Thanks so much.

would love to see some as well, single raw frames would be good enough!

Take a peak at some of the Dragon threads I started last year. I linked R3D downloads in many of them and included samples of still images + moving downrezzed edits. Hope that helps!

Basically OLPF 01 had the excellent dynamic range and slightly increased sensitivity Red originally specified, but problems with strange orbs around highlights.

OLPF 02 has excellently accurate color and no IR issues at all - OLPF 01 is somewhat better on these points than MX, but not as much improved as OLPF 02

Bothe OLPFs share the problem with CMOS magenta smear, however (all Dragon OLPFs have that, so far). Not sure if flare gate shadow was a problem on OLPF 01 (have not had a chance to test for that.) it is on OLPF 02. (It might not have been, again, I just don't know)

My opinion - even though I hope it doesn't get me banned again) is that the best product Red offers at the current time is still, all things considered, the Epic MX. In my opinion, and for the way we shoot (lots of night shots with soft fashion-like lighting and reasonable but not enormous budgets) the Epic MX is the best camera out there, beating out Alexa, Sony F55 and many others. Very easy to grade RAW combined with beautiful shadow fall-off, very good sensitivity, high resolution, and very small size and weight (which is important of you do a lot of Steadicam, light jib work, etc. as we do) are among the reasons I feel this way.

But I'm sure whatever OLPF 03 is will be much better, and might beat-out Epic MX in all ways, and then I will upgrade. I hope so, because I could use the $9500 tax deduction.

It has the same DR as version 2, just has a 1.5 stops more on the low end taken from the top (so cleaner and was able to push it to higher ISO's without much noise). The version 2 shifted the DR up to steal 1.5 stops from the low end and give it better highlight handling. In exchange it has more noise and less latitude on the low end than v1.

Here's some shots from v1, all shot in available light and mainly wide open. I'll see if I can find some R3D's to post.

Not mine but samples posted here that I played with:

Luigi's MX vs. Dragon V1 comparison at equal exposure. I matched levels of both. As you can see Dragon still had more DR above and below the MX sensor and has better illumiation at the same exposure obvious in the brighter midtones: (Notice the noise of MX as opposed to how clean the Dragon is)

The downside to the v1 olpf was the magenta flare that you can see in several of these examples and the olpf flare caused by the sun on a closed down lens, same as with MX.

Magenta flare (actually CMOS smear) is present in OLPF 02 as well.

OLPF flare in Version 01 was way worse than MX in version 01 (fixed in version 02) , and it also had the orbs around lights as you can see in Phil's examples (fixed too).

Because of how hard blacks clip in version 02, it has been my conclusion that the workable dynamic range is less.

The orb flare on Dragon OLPF v1 is different from the speckled flare pattern of MX correct?

The examples above are very helpful. But if anyone has any R3D frame grabs of exterior scenes they would be willing to upload and post a link that would be appreciated as well.

-I think the flare question has been answered. so taking that off my list of need to know.

Here's an R3D motion trim of a shot from above at sunset. I can say the camera saw more exposure than my own eyes saw...

I never actually had the flare orb show up on any of the footage. But I didn't have any hot lights in any shots either.

I don't own a camera, but the ones I use have v2 olpf now...

Also, if you really want R3D's, there's tons of old Dragon threads with R3D's in them...

The orb flare on Dragon OLPF v1 is different from the speckled flare pattern of MX correct?

Yes, because it appears around any bright sources in frame, pretty much always - even just a car headlight will make it show up. On MX you really have to be unlucky, use a very low f-stop, and point the camera at the sun at just the wrong angle. On MX it's not really a serious problem - and the degree to which it is is comparable to many other digital cameras.

Orbs samples in motion (You only have to watch the start of these):
Especially watch this one at the end night stuff:

Please understand that the orb flares and the sensor dot pattern are two COMPLETELY different things. MX has the exact same sensor dot flare, but MX does not have the orb flare. The orb flare is seen around strong light sources as a big magenta/reddish blob. The sensor dot pattern looks like dots (smaller than the orb) in a grid like pattern and those only appear if pointed at the sun on a closed down lens at like f16-f22. The orb flare shows up at any f stop...

This is what the sensor dot flare looks like (Also happens on MX)(Looks like a grid of red dots) Completely separate anomaly from the orb flare: This is caused by light being reflected/bounced off the sensor and onto the back of the olpf. (A more rare occurrence than the orb flare on v1 olpf)

These are two completely different things that can occur. The sensor pattern dot flare happens only at certain angles with a closed down lens (and is much less common but it happens on MX AND Dragon v1 olpf). The orb flare happens with most any hard light source or directional light source (Only Dragon v1 olpf). Like Rob said this can happen with car head lights, matches, light bulbs, etc...

These artifacts although subtle, where dead give-aways that it was shot on Red. With Dragon and OLPF2, it is very difficult to tell anymore.

Except with Dragon, unlike all other current pro cameras, you cannot move the "Lift" control of Lift-Gamm-Gain up, only down, because shadows are mush, so definitely in the grading session you can tell right away. I do not find the artifact subtle at all, the magenta CMOS smear and gate shadow problems either.
