  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OLED Bomb EVF Black Level of menu good, image its self NOT good!

It's sad to say the EVF is not one of the things RED has really aced. I still use my 5" with a Carbonite Scope and I love it that way, but... Having a good EVF would be preferred. They need to put some serious attention to this. Good news is that it's RED.. And they don't let things go. I am confident we're going to see an EVF in our future the likes of which GOD has never seen. :)

GO RED!

I had an early OLED EVF and was unhappy with its performance but then a year later I had to have the screen replaced (on warranty). The rebuild was a new EVF with all the outstanding problems sorted. Now a happy OLED EVF user.

Hey, that's good news. When did you get your upgrade Tom? Perhaps they have sorted out their problems. I've got an OLED on order so I'll report when it arrives as to whether its improved or not.

I'm not a fan of the Red EVF, I actually prefer my Zacuto EVF to the Red especially at the price difference.

Ok, so OLED EVF just came in. I have to do some more side-by-side comparisons, but first impression is pretty good overall. Yes, in dark underexposed areas you see a bit of granular pixelating in the blacks - but its way better than the same frame looks on our on our LCD EFVs (which in such a scenario simply look like washed out dark grey blah.). None of the exposure issues or strong colour shifts others are reporting. It gives an image that is closer to the 5" touch than the LCD EVFs at any rate. Overall, I'm pretty pleased.

Thanks Andreas for these very insightful first impressions!!!

Is the black Camera Sensor Black int he frame (for example lens cap on ) as black as the OLED menus?

did you see any posterization / polarization ?

if out have the chance to do some photos with maybe a smartphone/iphone of LCD vs OLED that would be fantastic!

I really feel like there must be a simple solution for this...I mean the chip chart looks fantastic, and then the image just changes. The black levels outside the crop of the image are true blacks and look great, but then the blacks within the frame in the OLED EVF just look muddy and posterized and way too warm overall.

I find it hard to believe that this would require replacing the whole OLED EVF?

SPECULATION ON:

which makes me think it is two different things: totally OFF OLEDS that need replacement. then they are OK on the epic mx but nor as perfect ats they could be.

then there is a EPIC Firmware / software issue or hardware limitation that just can't feed the oled the correct image, maybe due to processing.

the only hope is… that the new dragon boards can handle more and that then also hopefully this will be in firmware.

or that red just relases a bomb 2.0 with everything fixed, also 24/25p support and maybe bigger viewfinder image

SPECULATION OFF

I had the original OLED that exhibited all the discussed problems but have a new one now that is way better. I think Red has sorted most of the issues out. If Red is considering a new EVF I would wish for 1920x1080 res. The present EVF is just not sharp enough to determine if focus is good. I personally really want to see the image being captured in the formatt most of my clients will see it in.

which backs up Speculation No1: "totally OFF OLEDS that need replacement."

did you find there is still a raised black in comparison to the Menus?

Hello everyone !

Maybe a stupid question but i just bought a bomb oled . I read a few months ago that the flickering issues were solved with this new model .

When i set the time base projet to 24 and the sensor frame rate to 24 fps , there is a lot of strobing effect . Is it normal ? I already noticed this effect on the 5" but it is really softer .

Is it because the refresh speed of the bomb oled is only 59.94 ?

Is there any setting to modify ? any calibration ?

Does someone got this problem with this viewfinder ?

Thank you very much

Hello,

we noticed the same things. we also hope it will either be fixed in firmware someday…even though hope is low on that… then they would have done it already… or a new bomb model presented at this or next years nab.

it is really not cool to operate anything else than 29.97 or 50p or 60p time base projects with this :( :( :(

Ok thank you for your answer but i don't understand , it is an head breaker to shoot like this ! So what are the best settings ( time base projet / sensor frame rate ) to see the problem disappear a little bit ?

yes it is absolutely sad that such an expensive piece of High Tech Equipment is in its current state for non 30/50/60 projects practically unusable :(

the problem is: you have to shoot in the time base your project requires, for example 24 fps. you cannot change any other setting then.

you can set the timebase to 30 or 50 or 60.. but then your project is wrong so that makes absolute no se
