So I shot a project back in April on either Build 17 or 18, but I'm guessing it was 17.
Either way, its a side project, not work related so I haven't processed any of the footage yet.

The other day I upgraded to Build 20 on our camera (not that it matters) but also the newest Red Alert (v. 20)

I knew that when going back to old footage I'd have to Re-white balance before processing due to the new color science. Going back to my footage from April just now I re-balanced all the shots (used clipfinder to open Red Alert) then went to process them using RedRushes. My settings were as follows.

Half res standard debayer
Look source is Clip RSX
Scaled to 720 (16:9)
Apple Pro Res 422 HQ

When I hit start on Red Rushes I either get one of Two problems.
Either every single clip gives me an Error message and no files are created. Or Red Rushes claims that every clip is 1 frame in duration and it processes them 100%, although no files are actually created, and it blows through the 30 2min clips in seconds.

Am I missing something here? Should I re-install Red Alert? can i go back to the old Red Alert now and just use that color science ?

Hopefully someone can give me some good news. this project is the main part of my best man speech at my buddies wedding in a month.

Have you tried Clipfinder's render tool to do this? Do you get the same problem?

Isn't that part of the latest beta of clipfinder? If so I don't have that yet, although I'm willing to try it if I have to.

Red Rushes and Clipfinder both use Redline for rendering.they just provide a UI for it. But it's worth trying them both to see if you can replicate problem.

Even though it's not specifically mentioned, I don't think the new algorithms are implemented in redline yet. I think you'll have to render out of red alert.

EDIT: New version http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31158

The read me notes for Build 20 (Beta) camera firmware include these comments

Note: Download the companion version of RED Alert! (Build 20, Version 20.0.1 or later). TIFF, DPX and standalone QuickTime files rendered out of RED Alert! from Build 20 .R3D files will provide consistent color to the camera monitor ports.

Note: Existing version of RED QuickTime Codec, REDCINE and other post production tools should be compatible with Build 20 (Beta) .R3D files and QuickTime Reference files, but these applications will need to be updated before they will reflect the new Color Science. If using any of these tools, it should be expected that camera monitor and RED Alert! colors will not match to these applications, and you should re-white balance prior to performing editing or other color processing.

Note: Use of RED Alert! (Build 20, Version 20.0.1 or later) on pre-Build 20 camera firmware .R3D files can improve color purity and dynamic range and lower blue channel noise, however you should re-white balance prior to performing other color processing.

Once you have installed the latest RED ALERT package, both Clipfinder 2.1 and the 2.2 beta will render with the new color science (via REDline).
If the problem you have described with REDrushes persists when you use Clipfinder, then check the source file path (i.e. the path to the directories that hold the R3Ds). Make sure there are no "unusual characters" (umlauts, accented characters, etc.).

Let me know if you need more info or help.

Best wishes
Hans

Hans,

Thank you so much for the 'unusual characters' idea.
The simplest thing I could have tried all weekend and it appears to be working.
You saved me from a potential heart attack if this wouldn't have been fixed.

PS. anyone else loving tungsten white balances as much as I am now?

Hi Hans,

It renders flawlessly using Clipfinder but i have to open each clip in RA to see the colors because there is still a huge difference in the appearance between RA window and Clipfindert Loupe window.

Is it normal ?

I use Clipfinder 2.2 Beta 3 and RedAlert and Redrushes 20.1.2

Thanks

The loupe is still working the old way, you'll need to make your adjustments in RA (which is fairly easy in Clipfinder).

Try the latest RA. There was a bug that is fixed in the latest version.
