Old AVID Workflow... need help conforming

Hi all, I'm using Avid Adrenaline with MC Ver 1.6 (it's old I know)... and these are what i've done :

1. Using REDrushes, i made qt refs quarter resolution w/ MJPEG A codec, exported the ALE but altered the video format from 1080 to PAL in text editor to enable the ALE to be imported to the avid.

2. After batch importing all the offline clips using the ALE, i made CMX3600 edl of a sequence created using those clips (as drawn in red avid workflow graph i found in avid website) to test/try to do a conform.

3. The question is, what to use to conform the edl so it can be relinked to the original R3D files if i want to make 4K resolution of the cut? Or it's wrong to try conforming the cut using edl, should I use XML?

Thx in advance, and forgive me for using not HD ready old avid to do HD project... You can blame my boss for that

YOu can take the EDL into an application like Monkey Frame Extract to generate DPX files which would then be used in 2K/4K type application like Avid DS, FilmLight, Digital Vision, Scratch, discret, Quantel, Color, etc.

thx for the reply Michael, actually i've tried to conform using both crimson workflow only and generate DPX/tiff but cannot get 4k res (or don't know how to) and also using crimson workflow to export redcine xml and then conform in redcine to generate full 4k res of DPX/tiff files... and we're thinking of buying the licensed version of crimson since we're going to do an offline of 60secs spot with RED...

notes : these steps are done after importing the cmx3600 edl in final cut pro, and after that export the xml to be open with crimson...

Sounds like you might have additional steps that might not need. What is the final conform system to be used?

actually im not really sure what system the online will use, that's why im testing all the possibilities... most probably it'll be discreet flame/flint... can u pls name the unnecessary additional steps i made? and also what's the big difference between conforming using dpx and tiff, say if the online is discreet system and there maybe a cinema transfer for final result and the usual PAL digibeta dubs for local TV stations... thx again in advance...

I would generate DPX files from Monkey Frame Extract using an EDL. The same EDL can be used by the conform station to recreate the offline cut. Monkey can even generate a new EDL if needed based on organization used during the DPX creation.

hi all, now i have new problem regarding the mjpeg quicktimes generated in red rushes... avid cannot import them , now i have to convert those to mjpeg guicktime using mpeg streamclip, then avid can recognize the quicktime and import them for offline cutting... what i cannot comprehend is why quicktimes with the same codec but generated by different softwares behave differently in avid environment?

im using media composer ver 1.6 on macos 10.3.5...

Your problem may be the audio. Older versions of Avid can't import the RED created audio. Streamclip is probably producing QTs with 16 or 24 bit audio that Avid likes.

What we did on a recent job was : Create MJPEG QTs in Red Rushes. Do a batch convert to Avid Meridian 14:1 and 24 bit audio using "Livid" batch Export Utility.

This is an extra step but it's pretty quick and the resulting QTs fast imported to Avid thus saving time there.

Alternatively if you're shooting sep sound so don't need the audio just open each QT in QT Pro and delete the audio.

Hi all,

the "Livid" batch Export Utility is exactly what I am looking for, but it deletes the Timecode from my Quicktimes... Is there any Possibility to prevent it from doing so?

Does Avid read the Timecode from the Quicktimes or from the ALE? If it does use the TC from the ALE its working, when I am creating the ALE from the Orginal Redrushes Quicktimes...

Timecode and other metadata is provided via the ALE file. MC v3.5 reads timecode in the QT file, but I would still recommend using the ALE file for all other pertinent metadata provided by REDrushes, MetaCheater, etc.
