  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Okay. . . what am I doing wrong here?

Hey guys. . .

I'm trying to do a match-cut tomorrow and, for some reason, I am having trouble copying an old shot onto a CF card and playing it back in my RED One so that I can set marks on clear plastic stuck to the monitor.

I KNOW I have done this before, but for some reason, although I am able to copy the files to the CF card from my computer, and the RED registers the card just fine with respect to the amount of media on the card, it will not play it back. Indeed, it seems to imply that there are no clips on that card at all!

When I record to the new card, all is well, and when I play that back, it works just fine. But it only shows 1 clip. . . the clip just recorded. . . not the clip I've copied over.

Obviously, this is an issue for me, otherwise, I'll just have to guess, literally, at the position of the whiskey bottle and glass. . . not a great situation for a really fine match cut.

Any thoughts of what I'm doing wrong here?

I have not changed the camera one bit. . . same build exactly. Same RED Code setting.

What's going on?

Thanks!

Stephen

Copy all the files from your old CF card not just the clips.
Make sure that you have the same verssion of firmware that created the CF or clip.

Bummer. . . I did that shot on a hard drive. . . I just wanted that one clip.

All of them???

:-(

Okay. . . I tested your theory, Andrew. . . on some shots burned to a CF card. I copied them all. Still nothing.

This be puzzlin'!

I suspect that one of the control files on CF card keeps the list what is actually on the CF.
If you have the same version of firmware try to create a short clip on the new CF.
Next delete this clip and rename the old one to the same name the new one was created.
Copy renamed old clip to the CF card that you just created new clip on.
Now camera will think that the new clip is still there.
I don’t know if camera will not get confused with the different size of the clip that should be there or time stamp etc. but you can try

Remember that files are in the subdirectory of the same name so put this old file with the new name where the new one was created.
Also I suspect that camera needs for playback the .mov file as well and you probably do not have it for the old one, do you?
I always copy the whole content of the CF card to separate RED root directory so I keep all the files including any hidden files on the CF card, just to be on the safe side.

I did copy everything. . . including the .mov files. . . all four of 'em.

This time I got a warning "this clip is not playable" and a "green screen of death," which is more than I got last time. So your technique at least got the camera to recognize that there was a clip there.

I KNOW I've done this before. . . I just can't do it now.

Very strange.

Well, I'm doing it a ridiculous way, but I'll be able to at least get my shot.

I had to play the clip on my computer and get the QuickTime screen to be the exact size of the image on my RED LCD. I then just put on my marks and I'll be okay. Not quite the way I wanted to do it, but it'll work.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sounds like camera created the new file with the different settings that the old file was created. fps, compression and screen ratio, number of audio channels etc.
Unless you have a different version of the firmware now?

You have to match the current camera settings to the one that you want to play now.
What is it 4K 2:1 48 fps? Then the camera setting that will be used to create the new file to be replaced with the old one has to match exactly.

No. . . my settings were identical. We are always at 23.976 1/48th. It's strange, but it worked out.

Thanks for the attempt.
