After having attended the RED studios day this weekend and held the bodies in my hand and saw the footage I have a few thoughts...
First off....not sure why people are all excited about the size for 3D applications....it's not that small.
The min interocular will still be around 3-4" (I did a quick ref. measure with my cell). Also the CF card slot adds to width....I guess you can always shoot to red-ram....
This is still way to big for shooting a feature. Sure you can pickup the odd shot here and there but that's pretty large IO.
In the end of the day your still looking at using a beamsplitter. Granted it will be way easier to mount the smaller scarlets/epics in a beamsplitter but it's still a beamsplitter. Might be smaller rig but it's still a beamsplitter. I don't think we will get rid of beamsplitters anytime soon.
Not to mention in "cinema" mode with all the modules etc....the camera is about as long/heavy as a red one. Slightly smaller and lighter weight yes but only slightly.
Hell, even Cunima cameras with C-mount lenses only give you like a 1.75" IO....pretty good, but still to large for alot of shots.
I don't see shooting parallel with the scarlet/epic being very viable. Sure a reduction in IO from 6" to 3-4" is an improvement and allows you to shoot more stuff than with the 6" red one IO. But still, if you going to shoot a feature with a variety of shots and setups you will need a good beamsplitter.
Besides that, the new MX sensor is extremely impressive. There was a shot of Leo lit by a match shot at 1000iso that was amazing.....very noise free. This will allow us to stop down, gain DOF and just bump up the iso to compensate. Sweet. They also made improvements to reduce rolling shutter skew witch is good news for us 3D folk. Also, as of right now....the redmote while you can use it to control various cameras on a set you cannot send one redmote input to 2 cameras......I hope this will be addressed by the time most of us start using them. The redmote can be very usefull and advantageous during production to speed camera setting changes......because the usb cable slaved mode is flawed.
Don't get me wrong, the new reds will be kick ass. I'm totally excited for them. The smaller sensor size on the scarlet can be a very good thing for DOF for 3D. There are a host of improvements in to be had with the new bodies...I'm totally excited. But I feel like people got mislead by that image of the 3D parallel scarlet last year.
All I'm saying, is that I think upgrading the red one with the new sensor and shooting with beamsplitter will still be very appropriate. Which is good because it might be awhile before any of us actually start using scarlets/epics.....
anyways, just my thoughts for today....
