  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Oh sh!t... anyone ever seen this before?!

Have a look at these RCX screen grabs. Especially the HDRx settings...

I've seen weird glitches on the LCD before, this is first time I've seen a glitch in the R3D too.

I *think* I have an idea how I did it... I think I provoked a bug or misbehaviour by hitting record too fast, whilst the system was still transitioning out of focus check mode. Plausible?

And, my ears hurt! In a good way :-)

Never seen this

A distinct pause between commands for many digital appliances is never a bad thing.

i have a bad habit of hitting record while still in focus check, half the time my camera freezes but i never get glitches in the footage.

I've had the Red One freeze if I try to move through the clips too fast in playback mode. I think Robert is right - best to pause distinctly.

i had a weird issue that cost me a client... i lost probably 50k a year because of it.. I no longer rent my red out because of this issue..

really sucks and left a sour taste in my mouth

If this occurred ver recently (like in the last couple of days) it should still be in the camera-logs! If you send a log over to RED make sure to include a description like you did here - this stuff should always be of interest to the Tech-guys from RED (if it really is a camera glitch)!

So I'd talk about that with my Rep…

Wow, can you elaborate. That's a pretty big decision, must have been bad...

The other day I had switched between playback and record and got a weird looking image like that. 1/7th of the screen was in playback and the rest has gone to live mode. Then an error message popped up saying to send the camera in. The camera still hasn't arrived there but its supposedly a hardware failure, I posted about this in the bugs/problems section. So at least you didn't get a send in camera and log file message, but I'd def give it pause between commands to be safer going forward...

this happened to me once after hitting record while checking focus in 1:1 mode. never since though, now i usually just get a camera error that requires me to reboot. only on a specific epic-m.

some time ago on beta firmware we "managed" to get camera hang-ups pretty easy just by pressing the wrong buttons in the right order (or vice-versa, you name it)... on release-firmware there were totally no or literally zero problems tho.

from what I've been told the in-camera cache/space for logs only lasts for a few days until it gets overwritten by new logs so if you have any troubles where you think it might be a good idea to tell your RED-Reps about it's best to do that immediately and not wait like a few days or week(s) to send in a log... I think that#s important to know and will help RED to trace these kind of problems!

Thanks folks, everything else I shot yesterday was fine. I've opened a case and preserved data.

There was no error message. I *think* I saw 'unnatural' or blocky movement on the LCD as I was shooting, and I seem to remember cutting the shot when I saw it, then hitting record again, and the next shot was fine. I was running & gunning at a drag race (more for pleasure than for profit!), with the emphasis on the 'running'; I didn't check a single shot until I got home.

This unnatural or blocky movement (like stuttering/shuttering) is a glitch already - most of the time this happens only on the monitoring path and thus should not affect the recorded footage at all (as far as my own experience goes) - but if you have the time it would be good to do a quick restart of the camera as soon as you see it happening! If you don't have the time then it can't be helped I guess... If you have additional time tell the REP the reel-number or clip-name where you noticed it or if possible even the timecode-range, this will help speeding up investigations on the Log a lot for the folks at RED... I hope I don't tell any wrong info here but that's how I understood what I was told by a REP at the Opening Party for RED Germany (so I'd say it's good info).

I was once asked to use the Sony F3 on a music video shoot because supposedly the workflow was easier. On the day I turned the camera on and got nothing, just a red blinking light. Batteries were good, everything was how it was supposed to be, but no joy. I had my Epic with me, and we ended up using it. I processed the footage to ProRes for the client, and now they are apprehensive about the F3. My point is this kind of stuff happens with cameras of all different brands. Not just Red.

when you would look at the footage in full res there would be small white or black vertical lines.. I forgot.. but anyways.. it was throughout the entire image.. evenly spaced..

big client.. was pretty much my primary rental as far as cameras go..

I not only lost him as a rental.. but as a DIT as well because of this issue..

in fairness though.. RED was on the ball and fixed the problem.. it was within the year warranty. I dont know what it was but im guessing possibly and ssd reader thing?

Bad situation to be in. When I have a real camera problem which affects footage, I always try to press to find out exactly what was repaired or replaced, even in warranty, to know more should the problem resurface.
