Hi there...This will be the first feature project shot on Red I'll be editing. It will be shot 4K. I will transcode the files to ProRes422 and then edit. When we finish, what are the options for 4K online. Nitris? Smoke? Or any other finishing systems that can handle 4K onlining. Thanks a lot

There are a vast number of options, depending on your budget and platform.

Pretty much any app out there that supports RED supports a 4K finish. FCS supports it (In Color only), Smoke, Scratch, Baselight, etc.

Without more information, it's hard to recommend something that will work for you. There's always the eternal question, though: Why finish in 4K? Obviously there are some valid reasons for it, but there are just as many valid reasons for doing a 2K finish as well. Not a lot of detail in your post to go on.

I thought Final Cut down converts 4K Red footage to 2K when ingested. At least what it says in Red whitepapers as well as FCP manuel. Finishing in 4K is what the director wants. I'll be ingesting Red Footage as Pro Res 422 for offline editing, then go to a post facility for 4K finishing. Thanks alot

Using Clipfinder to relink the offline ProRes to Camera Proxies then sending to Color will yield a 4K full res debayer DPX/Cineon finish in Color 1.5. Happy director! The only side note is that you wouldn't get the new color science but I've been quite happy without it on many projects. You should have someone around who knows this stuff inside and out during the entire process for ANY type of finish or workflow. Consult a finish house in advance about what you plan on delivering to them.

Thank you for your Reply .... Unfortunately I'll be that someone:blush5:...I'm pretty confident about ingesting Red footage as Prores 422 for offline editing. At the and exporting xml or-and Edl for onlining. I wont be dealing with conforming and color stuff, but as you said I better check with a facility. But reading this posts, I came to understand 2k finishing is also fine considering that project has no FX work at all. Or am I missing something here....Thanks again?

A 2K finish is just fine for most projects. VFX guys will ask for a larger frame when stabilizing motion or compositing but as this doesn't affect you, just choose 2K or 4K based on your delivery spec. Make sure that all the offline files have the same name (You can add additional characters but don't take any away!) before beginning your edit. At the end, you'll likely export an XML which can be ingested by the grading application after conform. The reason I say to contact your finish guys is that they might have some little step that makes a world of difference in how they do things.

I normally do my online in Color 1.5 for 1080p output to ProRes as most of my work is destined for broadcast but Color can handle anything up to 4K. You will likely have minor variations if they're using Scratch or something else to finish so make sure you get in writing what they need from you.

Best luck!
