Gizmodo will probably post this thread soon too.

Congrats on the new toy. Can't wait to see what you point it at.

The funny thing is, that the article mentions jealousy. If that was something from Sony or Arri costing $90,000, I would be jealous, but because these new generation of EPICS and SCARLETS from Red all have different but affordable price ranges with professional being the base line standard throughout, it's excitement I feel seeing the first EPIC in the wild no matter who is first in line.

I know the RED ONE MX very well. What really struck me about the EPIC is that it just felt EASIER to work with. I'm not sure if it's a "graphical" thing with respect to the font and size of text in the menus - or if its the organization of the menu options - or maybe the fact that you can move through the menus with the touch screen, the side handle or the Redmote - or maybe all of the above. But it just FEELS easier than working with the RED ONE MX to me. It feels "better".

I kept thinking of the analogy Ted uses when teaching REDUCATION - "you can play checkers, or, if you want , you can play chess". There's a TON of controls and options in this thing - WAY MORE than the Red One MX - but it's so fast and simple to get up and rolling it's scary.

There are so many "little things" that made us smile. Like when you format an SSD the image stays live on the screen. You can adjust fan settings in standby and shooting mode individually, and in %'s. If you try to shoot a higher frame rate than the compression you have selected - you get a little warning that tells you the maximum compression that can be used with the framerate and the resolution you are shooting and asks if you want to proceed to shoot your shot with the maximum compression available. So, you don't have to "know" or look at a chart - the camera knows and it's one click to proceed - and you get the shot in the highest quality possible. VERY nice.

I really don't want to comment yet on very specific stuff and we are testing and I'm know some more features are going to come online soon - but I'll tell you this - we tried a ton of settings. And we tried changing pretty much everything in the menus and shooting multiple framerates, all available 5K formats, different time bases, shutters, etc. etc. - we removed the side handle while the camera was on - re-installed it while the camera was on (it takes seconds) - and EPIC never blinked.

It's mind-numbing to have so much firepower in such a small, light package.

REC.

With RED One it's a bit problematic when you'r at 1m from main actor in a small room like a bath room with lot's of sound reverberation.

Try recording on s35mm film in a bathroom, then get back to us about a camera being noisy... :)

Mark, were u up all night? I love that you're posting at 7:07 am.
Any chance I can swing by today and take a look?
I can be there in 30 minutes on the moto.
How fast does it take to turn on? What's the highest resolution you can use when shooting 5K @ 120fps?
Very exciting.

Sorry Jay - EPIC just left on a plane with Aldey, Eric & AJ to NIAGARA FALLS - you can only shoot so many tests looking at a resolution chart.

I'll see you in January after the 3rd.

Already?

Not quite the answer we are waiting for... ;-) but the fan noise of the RED ONE has a more disturbing sound as a 35mm shutter and it can't be filtered out in post without touching the voice frequencies.

Are you gonna test if the seals are waterproof? If it can handle the drop? Make sure to have it rolling at 120fps! :)

Love to know the 16 MP clears the sensor. Looks tiny with UPs. Looks darn sexy from every angle.

Have fun Mark. And share more as you find the time. Thanks.

I see some people almost wilfully seem to swallow marketing BS and FUD. I also see some familliar names setting the facts straight.

I still remember HDCAM and how amazing it was going to be, and how Sony never advertised it's 3:1:1 nature.... Or Panasonic and the HVX200 sensor resolution.

They can sling all the mud in the world.

It won't stop EPIC.

It won't even slow it down.

EPIC IS THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER CAMERA IN THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY AT THIS MOMENT.

The ONLY question that really remains is how fast RED can make 'em.

Anyone criticizing EPIC right now has never shot one and seen the images. Nothing comes close.

... EPIC just left on a plane with Aldey, Eric & AJ to NIAGARA FALLS

uh! ... you where teasing us with some INSANE IDEA for today ... lol .... niagara - right? ... lol

... of course the scale of insanity depends very much on the POV .... lol

Anywell, it seems an appropriate setting: "miracle of nature" meets "man made miracle".

looking forward to the footage.
Good luck to your fellows.

Mark.

Thanks for everything into this thread. It's been very useful and your willingness to share is greatly appreciated.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!! Have as much fun showing us EPIC as you did showing us the R1. Your enthusiasm is infectious.

I'm wondering if this intangible "feel" might be due to the use of a higher resolution LCD. I remember feeling exactly that way when I started using my higher resolution (Retina Display) iPhone, and your image of the RedMote display makes me think it has a similar pixel density. You don't really notice the resolution is higher, just that it looks a whole lot nicer than the old model ... and I seem to remember RED ONE used a low-res monochrome LCD.

I will tell you the LCD is just gorgeous. I think it might have a lot to do with it. I love using the touch screen. Didn't think I would - but I just love it.
