So I went through an old drive to find some projects I shot as a teen (2003-ish), but now that I've found them, I can't get them to play properly. They are quicktime files, rendered out from FCP 5 presumably. They open and play audio, but there's no picture.

Any ideas?

THANKS! :D

Thanks guys, but they're still not working.

Done a few google searches but still no picture. I tried VLC and Divx Players with no luck. I have flip4mac and perian, which i read should be rolled back to 1.2.2 if using Lion, which I am, and I did. Still no picture. I've tried opening quicktime in both 32bit and 64 bit modes. Nothing... I tried opening them in FCPX (I don't have FCP7 on my machine anymore) and it refused to open one clip, and would crash when opening the other.

For anyone who might understand why this is happening, the codecs are DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode , and Component Y'CbCr 10-bit 4:2:2, Linear PCM, Timecode

If anyone can help me get these clips to play, it would be super appreciated.

THANKS! :)

Brandon,
This sounds like a codec issue to me. It sounds like you are missing the codecs that the movies were rendered to. Since you can open the file in quicktime player, hit command-I to see the info and check what codec the files are in. Then, google the codecs and make sure that they are installed properly on your machine.

I've had similar issues in the past, and making sure that the proper codecs are installed usually fixes the problem. I've been having some problems with OS 10.7 not installing all of the codecs that were present in my previous systems.

Best of luck!

No, in fact I'm not sure I had 7 on my old computer. If I did have it, what would you have suggested?

Brandon -I am experiencing a similar problem; coincidentally, just yesterday. Since I last worked with them, I have installed FCP-X and then upgraded to Lion (from Snow Leopard). I now get a message that the files might be damaged.

I took a couple of them back to my old G5, running Snow Leopard, and they played successfully. I am thinking it is a Quicktime issue. My next step, when I get a minute, will be to bring the prior version of QT (QT 7?) back onto my Lion machine (Mac Pro) to see if the files will play.

Maybe that gives you a little hope. I'll keep you posted.

I had the same problem with some old Quicktime files, some MPEG-2 codec. They decode fine through ffdshow, so if your player uses ffdshow you just need to force it as your primary decoder. I converted them through MeGUI (forcing ffdshow as the decoder) to X264 MKVs. I am not sure what it is - Quicktime is always full of surprises.
