  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

This is marvelous news abut HDRx.
Personally I will be ecstatic if Scarlet 2/3" can equal the 13+ stops DR of Red 1 MX. Anything else is butter cream icing.

I think and hope this is not based on consecutive frames i.e. temporal route.

Controllable analog signal compression pre-A/D ? :)

Congrats guys. Amazing work.

How they are doing it... well that's the mystery. :D

It could be just very smart processing (in camera tone mapping?). The camera already captures more than a monitor can display, I think. So you process the highlights and shadows differently and bring them into the visual zone so you can see the dynamic range right away. ?

What if smart channel operations are strengthening weak channels with information from strong channels?

If there actually is some kind of real physics thing going on - like multiple shutter speeds or ND material in the camera then that would really extend the range... potentially massively.

In the future will cameras have multiple sensors at different ISO and a beam splitter?

One thing I'd like to see is a chart that had colors through the entire dynamic range. B&W charts tell you about noise levels but not color fidelity/accuracy. Not sure that chart exists... you'd probably have to build it out of LED light and gels along with reflective material.

Or just do the test that matters... interior day ambient light with window (no ND gel) and daylight exterior in the background. Take a meter reading inside, take a meter reading outside and show us the color corrected shot. That'll tell the tale. And tell us what exposure you actually shot it at.

(geez you leave the board for 8 hours and 25 pages of messages greet you in the morning - damn, lol)

God I love this company.

Technical achievement, and raising the personal bar as a business culture is an example we all should fallow. If Nasa came to this company with the discovery of a distant star with an earth like planet orbiting. This group would build the gear to image it. Not only would we be able to see an alien blue marble in space, we would see an alien chic sunbathing naked on the beach. I hope she's hot.

I believe I remember Jim mentioning that the Scarlet will be only slightly less than the Epic, but I don't know if that is the 2/3 or the S35. To me, slightly less means like around a half stop.

This is awesome though. Wow, 18 stops at this point, and just not having a bigger chart to test more. Will be interesting to see where it lands.

Once the rests of the details are worked out, my question would be, why would you NOT want to shoot in this mode? Clearly it has been stated there is multiple modes, I am just curious what the differences they all represent.

Really stoked about the news out of RED Studios last night. Can't wait to put all the new features through the paces!

Today I saw more stops from a captured R3D than I could with my own naked eye. No exaggeration. I've long talked about a world in which digital technology-driven dynamic range exceeds what the human eye can render. I am dangerously close to being speechless.

[ below is a picture of history being made by some of the industry's biggest underdogs ]

I love the understated nature in that pic of everyone just "casually" hanging out in a makeshift office with an EPIC and a laptop secretly blowing peoples minds.

exciting is not the word...

Jim, I think you have to open a job order for your team to develop a new chart.

You need to start setting your own reference standards, dude.

Yeah, but then people will accuse Red of doctoring their own charts :) The way people just make up accusations is just crazy. And the worst part, people start believing EVERYTHING they read.

You wouldn't BELIEVE the number of people I correct at filmmaker meet ups in my area about what they think they know about the Scarlet series, or the prices, it's just amazing.

Wow, can't wait to see samples...

Honestly, i expected the HDR-mode to be coming with a software-update after the release, so thats more than a nice surprise for me today.

Congratulations to RED, it's just amazing to see what you guys are doing there.

I ran into someone recently who was 100% convinced Scarlet was canceled. I had to end the argument by agreeing with him, sadly.

Oh, and also someone else, a top, top DP here, "RED is too 'flat'". "7D is better than RED". "I saw it with my own eyes". What could I possibly say other than "Well, whatever floats your boat"?

HDR movie mode is unbelievable! That will be a revolution if there is no added noise or trade-offs! Any chance to get it works on Scarlet S35 or 2/3"?
