Does anyone know if the odyssey7q can start recording by itself in 4k when hitting record in the camera (Fs700)?
The idea is to be able to keep it in a bag and hold up just one item...

Yes, there is the selection in the menu to take the cue from the camera's trigger to start the recording. It is important to tell the 7Q which camera it is connected to as different manufacturers use differing protocols, but RED is on the list. This is all explained clearly in out manual and Quick Start Guide. I just finished writing them and they should be up on our website in a few days. The Quick Start will also ship with the Odyssey7Q.

So, I just cane across the Odyssey7 and, rather than starting a new thread, thought I'd continue the discussion here with some questions.

It seems to me that this answers the prayers of many who have been looking for a RED module to record ProRes. Am I missing something? As for my own interest; besides wanting a nice extra monitor (OLED is attractive), I would like to be able to take a signal right on set and quickly/easily create h.264 dailies to plug into Light Iron Server. Can't tell if it record h.264 directly (?) but at the least it seems like transcoding the ProRes to h.264 would be quicker than R3Ds. Anyone have any knowledge in the area? Many thanks!!

Terry there are a lot of third party recorders on the market. Pix240, Samurai, Hyperdeck, etc... Some of them can do different codecs then others. If you need a specific codec I would check with other models rather then settling for something you don't need. Keep in mind the red can't output 4k via HDMI or HD SDI so this limit you to full HD proxies whatever codec you go with

Brian - thanks for the input. My attraction to the Odyssey was something of a price/feature set. A 7" OLED display for $1295 seems good. Add a recording capability - yes, I know it's HD but if I want 4K or more, I'll just go to the R3Ds - and it seems like an even better bargain. As I mentioned, I specifically would like to get to h.264 dailies very expediently and I thought this might be a good route to that.

Otherwise, not really looking for a recorder to replace my normal 4K workflow.

I've pre-ordered the 'vanilla' Odyssey 7 for pretty much Terry's reasons. Looks like a useful field monitor with a good feature set plus the bonus of HD dailies. On the 4K+ side, the Epic has that covered ;)
