  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ODEMAX - where is the info?

As I suggested in the "Off Topic" "Vimeo…": what is needed is for a name like George Lucas to offer an alternative way forward through a mass indie distribution site. Some name that will create law and order where chaos/anarchy otherwise looms. Peter Jackson? James Cameron? Ridley Scott?…..?????

PJ and Jim Jannard tag team?

"MainStream" has a nice, ironic, ring to it. ( :

I suggested some time ago that Bit Torrents and RED were made for each other. Still think that could work via an ODEMAX-like framework.

A direct download option would be nice, in the UK at least some ISPs throttle torrent based systems. They know there are plenty of legit torrents out there to, its not the illegal angle they are going for.

For sure N. It's something worth…. belabouring. There are enough very abled and well heeled filmmakers out there who have little love for the typical studio path. It might only take one or two of them to give "us" a fighting chance when it comes to distribution. Or at least provide an arena in which we can take pride in participating.

Odemax is not Red. Red recently has continually said this. Earlier they lauded their partnership with Odemax. Recently they have distanced themselves from Red perhaps having more concrete information than us.
Odemax is cryptic on their website except to cite trademarks from Red. The domain name is registered to Damian Chung of Drums, PA, so who knows?

It would be nice to believe that independent theaters could align themselves with any digital distribution system out there, but I think the reality is that the modest-budget theaters will just go with traditional hard drives, and the bigger ones will be tied to DCDC (the Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition).

I think there's one more option... new theaters (even new chains) being built to accommodate a flood of 4k content outside the Hollywood sphere of influence. ODEMAX would probably be a business to business exhibitor (as primary) for a time, but I think soon the usage would shift to being more entertainment-centric. All speculation, of course.

Can't say I know much about the current digital distribution schemes of theaters but I can't imagine that dealing with hard drives is easier, or even more economical than installing a $1500 piece of equipment, once, and being done with it; particularly when the DRM is built in and access to extra content is so easy and flexible. Just doesn't make sense to me.

They'll likely still want hard drives about with a REDRay about. In cinema feature land that's a lot of data internal drives will likely not be enough (then there's backups etc).

To be specific, I meant that it wouldn't make sense to rely on shipping hard drives around for distribution. Storage is a different matter.

But that is what is done now. The content is shipped. The license key I think is over the internet. But I really don't know. I am just a dumb consumer.

I guess I am not being clear... yes, I know hard drives are shipped around now. I was responding to the suggestion that shipping hard drives was somehow less expensive or easier than just getting a REDRay Player and receiving content that way. My point is that the need to purchase a $1500 player is not going to deter small theaters since it potentially offers several advantages in time and money.

the only thing is with that $1500 price tag, its a cost the theatre's would have to spend above what they already have. If what they already have or have just invested in it would have to be a solid advantage to spend another $1500.

I guess the 30% split to the theatre might be a big enough reason to spend the $1500.

Who knows, its all hot air at the moment and we are all just spinning our wheels till the people actually offering this service speak up.

The savings from 'shipping' digitally are not always forthcoming for distributors - in some markets you will run into 'virtual print fees' which are levied, eroding savings not having to ship out prints. The justification is that distributors should be chipping in for the infrastructure investment that exhibitors are having to make, since the distributor gets much of the upside out of the new system.

The sneakernet model, of shipping around hard drives ahead of time can work quite well. You can send drives out and chain the deliveries around so that one set of drives can be sent around a whole string of exhibitors well before release date. They ingest the content and ship the drive(s) on to the next theater in the chain. At this point the content is locked, and is unlocked at the time of release. Obviously this system is not totally ideal, but it's a workaround that is relatively solid - akin to the Russian pencil beating the US upside-down ballpoint.

I Remember an experiment a couple of years back comparing broadband to carrier pidgins with USB sticks. Broadband lost. Even recently a theoretical comparison between FedEx and the US telecoms systems bandwidth, even with the growth of the latter and the stagnation of the former FedEx as a data transmission method is way ahead, and not looking like loosing it for a good while (storage density going up helps FedEx here a massive amount).

There is no service currently being offered. The big studeos have recently signed on to a distribution by satellite service

There is no indication from Odemax about anything and they are not answering emails.

What is one to assume?

The "ODEMAX is dead" chant is starting to get old; akin to the Mark Twain comment about rumors of his death being premature. When asked about ODEMAX in a thread just a couple days ago, Jarred said this:

Thats just one of the companies we are not allowed to talk about till they are ready..

You can tell its really hard for us to keep all this stuff in. The bigger these companies we start working with, the more we realize we have a very different relationship with our customers than pretty much everyone else.

We also realize everyone else is always late as well.. but nobody ever hears about it because most others don't announce stuff till engineering is complete.

I guess we are suckers for punishment to decide to publicly announce before we should and then miss almost every date we ever give :)

i am sorry but i am not buying it. No company allienates its potential customer base the way Odemax has. There is no execuse nor possible explanation. Jarred said nothing. They lauded Odemax at the beginning and I think in goood faith.

Odemax has pointed nothing since their idiotic January 20th twitter post re Sundance. They have not responded to any emails sent by Reduser forum members. Nothing as simple as Wait. Comming soon. Nothing. They have shown their nature and I will have nothing to do with them. I'll suppport another company for my 4K content. A company like Red that has decent customer support people who respond even when they have no info to give one. Red makes me feel good. Odemax's conduct toward content providers and end buyers sickens me.

Mark! You've just given me an idea! I'm thinking of approaching some company that is "coming soon" and ask them to hire me to post a bunch of "they are a scam" type of stuff all over the internet. This will of course get people who believe otherwise to counter my continual posts of the same theme day after day, which in turn means the pending company stays in the forefront of discussion. BRILLIANT! Thanks for the idea!

Probably you would make a lot more money than an inde film producer who can't get distribution for his/her product. And certainly a lot more money than Odemax is on tract to make.

With all due respect Mark, you need to put things in context. Almost every aspect of motion picture distribution is being disrupted, or about to disrupted. All the models are changing. Companies are scared. Some companies have hundreds of millions on the line. Just because a company makes an announcement - they don't have an obligation to communicate to you before they are ready to do that. Have you given ODEMAX any money yet? You can pre-judge a company you know almost nothing about ... or you can think a bit more about it with an open mind. There just might be an AMAZING reason ODEMAX isn't talking ... yet :)

You are right of course. No reason to talk to potential customers like me.

You are right on another count. Everything Odemax has done or not done so far is amazing to me. Simply amazing. :)
