seems like the first image was too small, idk if its the site compressing it, but lets try again.

I'm willing to bet if you're showing a still with blinds in it you're dealing with CMOS smear. There have been a few threads on the subject here. From what I recall it's an artifact of the CMOS chip and there's not much to be done about it. Happens in all CMOS cameras.

I saw that kind of artifacts in Blackmagic cameras, never in a R1, I think probably the problem is that your shoot is underexposed, try to re-do the shot but this time add more light in that area, if possible use a light meter to adjust your values.

Yup, definitely a CMOS smear from what I can see (or have been told that's what it is)... this artifact is pretty much a "feature" when shooting against certain extreme backlight conditions, you just need to learn to look out for it.

If anyone can point to a site or thread that would actually explain this phenomenon (i.e. what is going on in the sensor technically when it happens) I'd be most grateful... Googling for "CMOS smear" mostly turns up stuff on the vertical line artifact which is obviously something quite different. Would be nice to understand this in a bit more detail.

For laughs, see if you can spot the artifact in this trailer that I shot (didn't notice it until afterwards so I had to try hide it with some color correction and an artificial lensflare but it's still there)...
