  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OConnor CFF-1 vs Arri FF-5

The FF-5 cine version has a shorter arm than the FF-5 HD version. Also the locking lever for the arm is shorter in the FF-5 cine compared to the FF-5 HD.
The gear ratio in the FF-5 HD is 1:1 compared to the gear ratio in the FF-5 cine and FF-4 of 1:2.
We have a big choice of focus gears in diameters, different widths and different modules (for ENG or cine lenses).
If you have a MFF-2 and a FF-5 together on set (both are available in cine and HD version) you could easily swap the focus scale you have made for a dedicated lens
from the FF-5 to the MFF-2 and vice versa. This is possible if you are using the standard knob (new design for soft stops with fingers) or the focus knobs
which were used formerly with the FF-3 (two speed knobs).
The FF-4 is not discontinued but we have discontinued the FF-3 because you could use the unique 2-speed focus knob feature now with all FF-4 and FF-5.

Hi Phillip

Can a FF-5 HD can be modified to FF-5 Cine? Severals years back I chatted with Arri regarding replacing the locking arm lever on the HD with a shorter version. Any other possibilities, changing gear ratio, shorter arm?

Thanks

Hi David,

no unfurtonately it is not possible. FF-5 cine is its own version with some different parts built in.
The only way to adapt a FF-5 HD to work with cine style lenses is to use a special large focus gear but it is a kind of compromise.

Hi Philip

Thanks for shareing info here on Reduser!

One question: Would you consider a re-reworking of the LF for the current hole in the market of a more sturdy studio Rod LW single sided follow focus?

thanks

Michael

Michael,

nothing planned till now. LFF-1 is a nice product but a little bit too expensive for the market nowadays. To make something in a similar quality and at the same time for a much lower price will be quite difficult.

We will see.

Thank you for answering and I appreciate that it might be a stretch to see the market today... (I am not asking for something cheap FF5 cine price is ok for a LW 19mm unit)

That said I feel an increaing number of Epics, Alexas etc will be used without a Focus puller And weight is important...because of the shape of these cameras (and some lenses) 15mm lw is not as compelling as it was when we where using s16...

Thanks again
