  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

O'Connor 2575 Vs. 2060...

Look at Sanjin's post to notice something. Based on how far off the center of gravity the weight is distributed, the head's capacity rating can change dramatically. If there was a lead weight sitting as a blob right atop the head then it has a far greater capacity than a long heavy lens cantilevered way out in front of the head. The Optimo 12x is more than two feet long and weighs more than 25 lbs., with most of that weight out in front on some huge front elements. This makes a huge stress on the head.

Other than the cost to your wallet and your back, there is never such a thing as too big a tripod head. At the CML Shootout / drunken party at NAB a few years back we had a Canon HV20 sitting on an O'Connor Ultimate 120EX head. That was fun -- I think they mounted it with Gaffer tape.

Go forth with your 2575 and don't look back.

I have the 2575 and sometimes I'm jealous of my friends 1030HD... I guess further down the road with a crew it won't be a problem. I get to have my laugh when I get the 24-290.

1030HDS=$4660 (discount) load=33lbs / wt=8lb
2060HD=$8121.00 (discount) load=53lb / wt=16lb
2575C=$10157.50 (discount) load=87lb / wt=23lb

The Atlas is the prettiest head I have ever seen in my life

Forget the looks, you should try to touch her with your hands :biggrin:

Yes, I love it, but Evin has a point and I think he made a good choice with 2575.

Sanjin, the 120EX is a joke! That thing weighs 15kg! Unless you are shooting with stereo rig with two Optimos or two Master Zooms rigged to a gigantic mirror box, this is just a f@#$-ing big lump of metal to lug around for no benefit whatsoever.

The 2060 would't cut it for me, no way. I shoot on the long end in windy conditions a lot. This is where I find Atlas 30 in a different league. It is rock solid and silk-smooth compared to anything else I tried.

All things considered, I think you made a good choice. If 2575 works well for your most common setups and situations, it has substantial cost advantage over Ronford and "only" 3lb disadvantage. I think you would not like the 2060 in the long run.

Other than the cost to your wallet and your back, there is never such a thing as too big a tripod head.

These charts listing center of gravity above platform inches... always confuse me. How is the center of gravity height for the RED calculated? Do you just draw a line through the mid point of the RED and thats the highest point?

No, it is the centre of gravity of the entire setup mounted on the plate. It depens on the configuration and things such how high you mount battery, LCD, VF, etc..

First you adjust balance by sliding the camera forward/backward. Then, you adjust counterbalance by setting drag to zero and adjusting the counterbalance spring knob. The camera should stay where you left it whether pointing up, straight or down. :whistling:

OK, I lied, there is a way to "measure" the centre of gravity:

1. Tie a rope on one point of the rig
2. Hold the rope and dangle the camera free.
3. Draw a line across your rig being the extension of the rope
4. Tie the rope at another point of the rig
5. Repeat steps 2. and 3.
6. The intersecton point of the two lines is your centre of gravity
7. Take a ruller and measure how far is that point from the pivot point of your fluid head. That's your offset.

But, you may find the above procedure more practical :clown2:

The problem i see with the 2060HD is that it doesnt have enough friction. Even at hightest friction setting (9) there are times you wish you could have a harder setting.

Oconner will take care of that for you by switching the mechanics to be the same as the friction settings of the original 2060.

If you are buying new, you can order it that way too I believe.

Got the 2575 set properly for counterbalance from day one. That part is easy to figure out. Your second post seems like the only way to go for calculating COG Height to find maximum weight on the chart... thanks for the insight.

Unfortunately no.
Thou I'm sure you could torture him a little more.
It's US dollar from BJ Purcell / Custom Supply.

Abel has special RED deals on O'Connor tripod kits as well.

Hi Evin,

It may be that they are quite different packages really, if I remember right the one at Abel Cine has a lot more in it than at Custom Supply wich doesn't include sticks nor cases. There probably goes your price difference.

Enjoy this thing of beauty :)

I've bought both a 2060 and 1030hds from BJ and there is no doubt his prices are well below abel's. They even DROPPED the prices from earlier in the year!

Completely satisfied with what I got and for quite ridiculous prices.

Johnny,

I see you live in UK - what was the customs duty´etc.. for importing the heads? - or did you buy in the UK?

can you use the same "assesories" from the 1030hdS and 2060?

best,

Sidney

On the 2575 complete system... fluid head case, stick cases, fluid head, sticks, 2 spreaders & euro plate... the Abel deal is slightly cheaper.

If it makes you feel any better, I have the O'connor 120. It is heavier than the 2575. But it is an amazing head! I also use it with my Red and 12:1.

This is why I have it:

Posting prices should only be done with the permission of the vendor.

I've talked to BJ and both his prices and Abel's are in line.

Please contact your preferred reseller for a quote and please DO NOT post your price quote unless you have the expressed permission of the vendor to do so, or they are published elsewhere on the web.

I know this sounds like I'm deterring competition but in reality when we play boutique vendors and resellers against each other on price the only thing that ends up happening is that prices raise across the board. (This has already happened with O'Connor). There are some really great deals out there but there won't be much longer if we keep this up.

If this vendor posts 'special deal' prices for me and my 'friends' here, they should/do expect that communication.
But you asked Evin. I was trying to keep it a little discreet.
