  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

O'Connor 1030HDS

And I thought I was going to be the only dissenting opinion Ketch. :-)

No question the 1030 is a very good head. No question it strikes a good balance between weight and performance.

I would not hesitate in recommending one.

That said, it isn't a 2060. I worked a five camera RED shoot about a week ago for four days. We gave the most challenging camera work to the best operator there (Art Adams for those of you who read CML) and we gave him my 2060HD and camera package.

I worked on a couple of 1030's a Miller 50 etc.

Yes the 2060 is heavier, but it's clear to me that it's worth it for cine style shooting. It is noticeably smoother in action, stops more cleanly and is just more precise all around.

Cheers,

Steve

I agree, Stephen. It weighs twice what the 1030 does and in cine situations, it's worth it. On the other hand, the 1030 at half the weight isn't half the head, maybe 3/4 or so. Life is endless trade-offs. I'm just glad Oconnor gave us two such superior ones.

If you wanted a 1030HDS w/ another tripod what would it be?

Single leg carbon fiber setup like a Gitzo Series 3 Mountaineer or Miller 1505. Like the foam padding of the Miller. Something that is slim and totable yet robust enough to support the weight. Also like the Gitzo one hand to open, anti-leg-rotation setup, smart idea.

Cartoni 604

Cartoni 604

Cartoni H604 CF legs are rock, I mean rock solid and only 9lbs. Much studier than either the O'Connor 25L or the Miller 1576 Sprinter II. Yes, about $400.00 more but really worth it IMHO. I have not used the Miller 925 HD legs but I would think they compare to the Cartoni's. And Cartoni has the K711 / 712 that are even more heavy duty.

I use the Cartoni 604's with an Arrow 55 head and I find that excellent for my R1 and plan on the same for the Epic.
