Hello Everyone. I've been flirting with the idea of putting together a sound kit, and in my searching, I came across Oade Brothers Audio. http://www.oade.com/ They mod portable recorders, upgrading the pre-amps, imputs, etc., in order to (they say) improve sound quality. I wanted to see if anyone has experience doing business with Oade Brothers. Is the improvement in sound worth the price of the mod? I appreciate any insight you might be able to give.

Very reputable and definitely a known quantity in the audio industry.
Highly recommended.

Agreed. i think we had a tascam recorder modded by them. definitely known in the audio world.

For what it's worth we did a blind test with a stock vs modded unit, and the owner of the freshly modded unit could not tell which one was his. My advice, take the money you would put into modding a lesser unit, and use it toward the nicer unit you would rather have.

I know music recordists who have had them service and upgrade recorders. they were pleased with the results. When I needed alternative power solutions for field recorders, they gave very good customer service.

I had my Fostex upgraded by them - definitely more musical .
But I only have two words for you:
SOUND DEVICES

How can an audio recorder be more musical than another?
What happens when you record dialog?
If Oade would provide before and after documentation their mods might be more believable.
As is, I suspect they put in a resistor to pad down the input giving the perception that the unit is quieter.... this is favorable to the deadheads that record rock concerts with those units.

Every sound guy I know and work with uses the sound devices 788. But I would get at least a 744 if you can afford it. You can't beat sound devices for their build quality, ease of use, and pre-amps. Buy once.
