Attn: NYC indie filmmakers.

If you're like me, and you bought a RED camera in order to film your own productions (NOT primarily to hire-out), and so your RED is sitting around collecting dust whenever you're in pre-production / postproduction, maybe we can combine resources.

I'm getting ready to shoot a month-long project from April 16 to May 16, and I'm worried that something might break sometime, even if it's just a cable.

I have insurance, but it's not going to help much in terms of keeping up with our tight shooting schedule. It would sure be nice to have extra backup gear onsite. If anyone out there is in a similar situation, and can't afford to purchase/rent a second RED, maybe we could help each other by bartering.

Let me know.

Being owner operators this kind of support is pretty essential.

I've got a pretty good "unofficial" network where when I have a shoot I call my RED owner friends for a "back up" camera.

Deal is - if the back up camera gets used - full camera rental is deferred to the person who provided the back up. If it doesn't get used, the consolation prize is a nice bottle of wine - or case of beer - or imported sparkling mineral water.

This has worked pretty well so far.

Any interested RED owners within striking distance of Chester, NY?

(a little over an hour north of NYC, on the west side of the Hudson)

We are close but our camera won't be available for a whole month like that to be on site but you can give us a call and if its sitting we will make the drive up.

Now this is a really good idea. My one question is this Dylan: if it's only the backup body that gets used, what about other accessories? In other words, and understanding that the backup has to be used, is the backup owner compensated only for the body, or for a full camera rental package as it was used on set?

EDIT: on a total aside, we bought a nikon mount from Dylan, and he sent it before even receiving the money. A real standup guy.
