  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac...

Why are the gaming cards (GTX) faster ans cheaper than the pro cards (Quadro)? I have never understood that.

And why now Apple isn't supporting any GTX CUDA capable cards? If someone wanted to take advantage of Mercury playback in PPro on a Mac, it would be necessary to buy FX 4800!

The 285 is still available in some markets and 4800 will be through next year. 4000 looks interesting, as Jake said, single slot and lower power consumption. Often the number of CUDA cores is based on these two items. We expect the Nvidia CUDA solutions to continue to get faster every year so change is the only constant.

Heya,

There are kexts (device driver) for the nVidia GTX 465/470/480 in the 10.6.5 beta update.

Now we need to see EFI supported products. At least there are drivers there.

simply, Apple have their way of choosing their platform.. they always like to choose the least compatible and the leat popular techs around.. no flash let's use HTML5, no CUDa let's use OpenCL, no USB3 let's use lightpeak,, etc etc..
all just to make their customers feel unique about the silver furniture they buy..
also nVidia is not a good friend of Intel which's apple's best..
maybe they may support one of the GTX series few quarters later as they did with the 285..

Of coarse eventually Mac will support them. I'm troubled, that there is only one CUDA card supported presently and not an inexpensive one at that. And the same GTX 285 Mac edition is at least twice as expensive as PC version.

You are, of course, right Peter. Earn and learn. Buy the best one you can get now and then upgrade the card when you can. Pretty cheap way to, eventually, go from 12 layers to 16.

Good god, if you need more than 5-6 layers to grade, then there is something seriously wrong.

Does this mean you can hack off-the-shelf cards to work in some way?

Hello,

Unfortunately the common problem is that 95% (?) of video cards do not support a big enough ROM to handle both a standard BIOS and an EFI image. Instead of the 256k ROM you usually see a smaller 128k (at least on the nVidia cards).

One of the solutions for nVidia cards has been software injectors while running a lower-end (cheap) nVidia card along with the actual high end part you want (in an actual Mac Pro). Obviously this sucks because it eats a slot.

Another method with the GTX 285 was to de-solder the 128k ROM and place a larger 256k ROM on the board and then flash the board with the official 256k image. This can be tricky as its all surface mount and you really don't want to nuke your board - even if it is $200+ cheaper than the Mac specific version.

As for ATI, some cards actually do have enough space to house a BIOS and an EFI image. When the ATI Mac cards are released late August along with the new Mac Pros, there should be a lot of activity of individuals dumping the actual ROM's from the ATI cards and others trying to flash "non-mac-special" cards purchased at more reasonable prices.

So there are methods of hacking cards and new ones should be popping up as well.

All I want is the option to _buy_ the card I need along with proper support instead of having to resort to soldering/injecting/etc. Blah.

You can read a lot about a group of people who spend a lot of time hacking video cards for the Hackintosh and the Mac Pros over at netkas.org, macforums.com and insanelymac.com.

Best!

Pardon me for my ignorance. But what is this topic referring to and why is all of this tech talk so important? Are these cards for color correction or something else?

Nevermind looked it up.You guys must really have some large edits to worry about all of that!
