  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Number of reds in the wild..

just received 6091 last week...

That would be #6091 in terms of orders taken. That doesn't mean they've shipped 6091 units. In fact, to my knowledge Red has never really revealed just how many units have been shipped. I don't personally feel that they have to, I'm just saying that they haven't.

Holy moly was i off. :) I've been shooting with some of the earliest reds here in toronto(two digit serials). ever since, i've been seeing them more and more, and with rental houses getting them by the dozens. i figured 3-4 of the major city in toronto having at least 200 each. La has 3x that, new york, etc.. Europe. but 6000+ isn't all that much.
I wonder if they will experience similar delays with the epic(s) deliveries? Perhaps they can crank them out faster this time around.

mmost when did you place your order?

about 5k units still seems pretty large to me... what is the total yearly sales of all brands of PL-mount cameras?

I placed an order for the company I was working for in Florida at last year's NAB. The assigned serial numbers were 1632 and 1635. I don't believe they ever took delivery, however.

You mean 2007 NAB. That when I ordered and I'm 1686.

Jim has mooted 5000 units.
As an aside and not wholly unrelated, Sony announced the sale of the 1000th HDC1500 broadcast OB camera recently.
Last year Sony said that there were 31000 HDCAM units in use (that is camcorders and vtrs)

I don't think RED has impacted Sony much apart from nicking a handful of f35 and f23 sales.

Scarlet's impact on ENG EFP camcorder market could be more dramatic, but since that is a growing market, it looks like their is room for everyone.

Most of Red's sales aren't at the expense of its high-end competitors. It's not as if most of us would have spent ~$300K on an F35 if the Red One hadn't come along. What Red is doing is vastly expanding the size of the market for digital cinema cameras, which is far more interesting and important than merely stealing customers from established vendors.
