Nuke Viewer LUT for RED Footage?

Hello All

I'm stumbling my way through all of this, and really this is a Nuke question but since there's a bit of overlap on this thread, what the hey. In a nutshell, I have reference QT from the Avid that looks bright and punchy. If I bring the .r3d file into Nuke for that same clip, using the Metadata color settings, I get something drab and washed out. If I pull it into Storm, it looks punchy by default. If I change the RED Look from "RED Look" to "Default" it looks washed out, like it does in Nuke. Therefore I'm guessing I'm missing a viewer LUT in Nuke for this "RED Look." Can anyone point me to where I could find this viewer LUT and how to install it?

Thanks

Bill

1st thing your dealing with QT which could have issues with the correct gamma flag in the ref.
Remember that Nuke is working in a Linear vs Avid and other applications.

Few questions
Which version of Nuke , QT ,Avid and OSX are you running?
Do you have all the updated RED tools on your system?
Could you post some of the r3d metadata to see ?

Also a better place to post Nuke questions would be at vfxtalk & fxguide in the Nuke forums

Hi Bill and Jim, I've noticed the same with Storm and Nuke. I'll run it by the Nuke guys to see what they say.

many thanks,
Dan

I find you get the best results in Nuke by telling the RED SDK to decode as REDlogFilm, and telling Nuke to interpret it as Cineon, like this:

Make sure you also choose colour science v2 for this to work best.

Ah ah! That's definitely closer. Thanks Nick!

Hi Jim

I'm running NukeX 6.1v3, Storm Beta v2, and my RED tools are pretty recent (I think). Is Nuke actually using an outside piece of RED software to do the conversion?

How do I post/access metadata as text? Here's what I get from Nuke's View Metadata node:

Nick & Gunleik, I like the film-like image I'm getting from using the REDlogFilm/Cineon/Nuke combination but it's incredibly dark and low contrast (I have to bring the exposure WAY up to even see the grain). Am I missing some kind of LUT?

Also, I'm using footage shot with the MX sensor. Might that be part of my problem?

What do you have your VLUT set to in Nuke? If it is set to "none" you are looking at linear light, which will indeed look dark. Here is a screen shot of some sample Nuke settings, and the resulting image, which does not look dark or low contrast to me. Also worth noting are the RGB values from the backlit chart, which have float values much greater than 1, meaning a lot of extra highlight detail is available for grading as long as you don't clip it at any point in your workflow.

Hello guys,

I am going to do some compositing work in nuke with Red files..and i want to be sure that i am going to work in the right workflow.

I am quite confused with the LUT settings, gamma etc

We are going to deliver in HDCAM SR and Digital Cinema (DCP).

When i load my red file in nuke i have the following default settings in the read node.

colorspace: default (linear )

In the red metadata section

decode colorspace : Red space

gamma curve: Linear

My viewers LUT: is set on sRGB (i don't have any monitor or external display..i am just going view the image from my pc)

Is there any of these settings i should set to something else? Or something i didn't mention.

My image looks quit washed out that's why i do believe i need to change something...

What about my write node colorspace settings ?

What settings i should use considering we are going to deliver in HDcamSR and Digital cinema as i mentioned above.

I would really appreciate some help if you can!!

Cheers

I find myself usually doing a bit more to the image than just choosing RedLogFilm and redColor2 prior to development to any format/any workflow...

And have very good results from that.

Makes sense, though, if not RAW would've been rather pointless...

BUT RLF/RC2 WB ISO are the first to be set...

You could do this to verify (just to get started...)
If you have a pleasing image with Redgamma2, you can export with RedlogFilm with those settings.

If the redgamma2 image looks off, probably the redlog film one will, too...
