  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nuke Studio NAB 2014

I was just going to post this. I wonder how full featured the grading functionality will be.

Since its a node based VFX tool, color correction features should be plentiful.
User friendly and fast? Now thats another issue. If a lot of mouse clicks are needed to do something simple, then it probably isnt going to be great for color. Hopefully they are working with a third party panel manufacturer or going the OEM route like Mistika did with Digital Vision.

People have quickly forgotten about Storm...
The Foundry knows well how to make things work in a user-friendly fashion and how to integrate 3-rd party control panels...

Nuke has never been a dedicated grading tool but a very capable compositor. Telling from the NAB presentation Nuke Studio will be a contender to Smoke and Flame but hardly to Resolve. Flame and Resolve both now have a TL included and both can work as an NLE (Resolve 2011, Flame 2014 onwards) but are otherwise very different. Resolve 2011 ist based upon a famous grading tool and Flame on the leading industry compositor and finishing tool. However, Flame can do very well deep colour correction but not in a pace like Resolve is able. On the other side Resolve has some compositing features but lacks a 3D compositor etc....

Flame is great for client attended compositing and finishing sessions, typically TVCs. OTH Resolve is great for finishing TV-shows, feature films and generally grading footage with the client in the room.

Nuke is a shot by shot compositor and until now not the tool of choice when a demanding client is sitting behind your neck. Eventually this will change with Nuke Studio. But like Flame it won't be a meaningful grading tool for client attended grading sessions. Here, Resolve is the much better choice. Horse for courses.

Any info on how good of a NLE it will be?

NUKE Studio on AMD GPUs ...

NUKE Studio on AMD GPUs ...

There is a deal for current nukex owners for the complete package that includes studio. This is going to really help my workflow.

We had the The Foundry guys on the AMD booth at NAB where they were demoing 3D texture painting in 4K using MARI ... one of the main London NUKE engineers gave me a look under the hood of the alpha version of NUKE Studio running on the AMD GPUs ... very friggin' sweet!

NUKE Studio is both a great node based CGI app AND an intuitive TimeLine editor definitely targeted at replacing SMOKE like apps and legacy, heavy iron finishing tools .... it will be a perfect compliment to the new Resolve 11 functionality.

OpenCL is going to revolutionize our industry ... when you combine 64 bit apps written for OpenCL with 16 GBs of VRAM you really have an incredible engine for driving 4K workflow .... we'll be demoing the beta of NUKE Studio as soon as it starts to ship next quarter ... now with the combination of Adobe Creative Cloud, DaVinci Resolve, RCX-Pro and NUKE running on OpenCL we're going to see 4K finishing pipeline performance go up and prices come down .... Moore's Law on steroids!

Jake, how would you rate Baselight Editions compared to a fully fledged color correction system in this Nuke Studio context?

It has identical color tools to the stand alone Baselight. Obviously you are missing the full still store functionality, it is missing the grading layer display and there is no Blackboard, but those things are no reason why you couldn't grade with it. I'm pretty sure BL Editions also works with the Slate, Elements or MC Color. With time BL Editions will only get better.

will this be anything like premiere or final cut? would be great to have a full-featured NLE combined with all the awesomeness of nuke. looks like its possible to edit simple/short things but i guess there are no things like multi-cam mode in it (yet)? the nesting in premiere is perfect for music video's.

No, iMovie will have more fully featured editing tools. This is just for on-lining EDLs and managing shot versions.

Thanks Deke. But I'm not familiar with REDs SDK versioning. Does that mean it does support Dragon or not? Thanks!

Bob
I think it's one from late 2013, it has things like epic monochrome but doesn't have DRAGONcolor or RedGamma4. I've noticed nuke only uses the sdk release once they are totally bomber since so many major productions need that type of stability(there is no way i know of to select the release version, i'm assuming it must be compiled into the app). i am btw a super happy foundry user, and appreciate all the testing they put into apps.

I know some customers using it with red dragon shows which shot back in the fall. There was a newer firmware updates for it though which requires us to update to a newer Red sdk in order to read them. Dragon Color/RedGamm4 came out after NAB. I'm talking to the engineers and hopefully we can get this into a point release but we will see as it is all hands on deck trying to get Nuke Studio ready.
