November 3rd Guess the Specs Contest

Seems as if there are a couple opinions about about what RED is going to deliver N3. To keep our hands busy and to determine who has better future reading powers . . . let's have us a contest!

Rules:

1. Post the most detailed specs, price and target delivery date for as many RED products you see being announced N3.

2. Post exact, specific data specs only - don't go off on a diatribe why you think what and no hedging ie: "I'm thinking 2/3" but maybe S35 if it isn't FF35"

3. One post per account - no edits. Doubles or edits disqualify all your posts.

4. In a tie (doubtful) the first to post wins. The more or more specific the data wins over lack of data.

5. Cut off time for contest is 3:00PM PST N3.

6. Posts will be compared to the official N3 RED PR to determine winner

7. Prize - bragging rights as Master SPECulator, Custom Made Avatar and maybe . . . a RED tee shirt signed by J&J

To be RED authentic, I reserve the right to change the contest rules and prize (snark snark)

Below is the Contest Winner Hat signed by both Jim and Jarred!

You guys need to figure out who won the contest - I'm traveling this weekend. Post you best argument to be winner

Example and my entry (should be easy to beat):

Scarlet:
2/3"
Fixed Lens
120FPS
$7,100

Epic-S
S35
200FPS
$15,100 (brain only)

Epic-X
FF35 - 6K
300FPS
$40,000 (brain only)

Better include more data since the more specific wins. IE: Lack of ship date loses to stated a ship date (any date). Specific data takes precedent over lack of data

A merge back between Epic-S and Scarlet, to a single Scarlet.

S35
4k
Interchangeable
120fps - 180 burst
Shoot-ready package
= $14,000

Shipping within 7 days of Nov 3rd. (A little cheeky, I know)

Scarlet:
2/3"
3k
Fixed 8x Lens
120FPS (burst to 180)
CF module only (SSD extra)
$6,995
Shipping by Thanksgiving

Update on:

Epic-S:
S35
120FPS (burst to 180)
$15,995 (brain only)
Release: EOY 2011.

Epic-X to Stage 3

RedRay Projectors:
Pro Model:
5k.
SSD/CF slots
3D compatible
$8995
Release: EOY 2011

Prosumer model:
3k
CF Slot
$1995
Release by 2Q 2012

NO update on Scarlet (interchangeable).

You want specific? I'll give you specific!

  • Only one model announced. Scarlet will be amalgamated with Epic-S.
  • 4320 x 2160 resolution (specific enough? :) )
  • Mysterium X sensor. Same pixel pitch as Red MX and Epic.
  • DSMC form factor. Compatible with all Epic accessories.
  • Interchangeable Mount and therefore lens.
  • Maximum RC: 7:1
  • Maximum frame rate at full sensor: 60 fps
  • Maximum frame rate at crop: 150 fps
  • HDRX included.
  • Price: $9,900 Brain only, no mount, no SSD module, no side handle. Just brain.

POSSIBLE: "Fixed Lens" single piece lens + mount. The same 8x lens that was supposed to be on the fixed scarlet for use with 3k crop. Basically, this would satisfy all Scarlet 2/3" people AND satisfy large sensor needs from everyone else as well. Price is probably $3000.

Scarlet Fixed
2/3"
3k
120fps - 300fps at 2k
Shooting package $8,500 (price increase in January)
(4k dragon sensor upgrade path)

Scarlet Interchangeable
S35
5k
60fps - 120fps at 3k - 300 fps at 2k

I think they will announce just one camera:

Scarlet

... and abandon the 2/3 sensor version.

(and I also think they will announce a partnership with another company)

That is a hard one, it could be several choices.

A fixed, or a mount, a 2/3 to 16 or a ff35. I think 16mm but we will get 2/3rds fixed, 4k is my hope, but 3k is in with a cgance but not my officual guess. Price 4 or $5k basic spec.

So, 2/3rds 4k for $5k which maybe wrong.

However I was writinfg a funny guess to a frein in response to my bender time traveling Time code post:

Yes, a hologtaphic time camera that sees the future of time and space connections of the scenes photographed. The special feature though, is that it also sees accross the space time devide accross the streams of time and alternative dimensions. Really impressive stuff, but it showed the universe was really green, which did not impress Jim much. But maybe as I have revealed it early, Jim won't release it and will introduce a normalish camera instead.

Oh, hold it, or was that the year november the 3rd 3011? Let see, Jim was looking a bit peakish, and his head was in a Jar, being pushed around by this robot, with a real beamer of a shiny metal ass, and my donkey was a skeketon in a museum, and Steve Jobs was there with his head in a Jar trying to start a company called IGreen.... I wonder..... Nah, I must have been dreaming after I drank

that purple alien slug martini and Jim tried to shove me into a miniature blackhole, crying out I was violating the time continuim, or something, "like a modern episode of Doctor Who", me and House just looked at him and left the building.

Now for a funny unofficial guess:

It could be shaped like two bright Red crystal spheres held aloft at the presentation in Jim's hand, with a lens coming out the top of them, looking for a Canon ;-)

Ah well, if there is maybe a t-shirt on the line...then here is my prediction.

There will be a SCARLET fixed - there is a professional demand for such a thing. This will be the "affordable" version $12-$15K.

Beyond that, SCARLET will be EPIC in every sense of the word, with the ability to "unlock" its feature set through purchased firmware upgrades or keys. It will be released with 4K enabled. You pay a base price similar to RED ONE but you get HDRx, Magic Motion, short start-up times, lightweight form factor, etc.

When you're ready or want the rest of the features, you pay for a key - you can upgrade the same box to 5K, enable more frame speeds, etc.

Everyone buys the same box and pay-as-you-go for extra feature sets.

RED wins...fewer production lines, they can keep cranking their existing EPIC lines, which are already capable of pushing out cameras-to-order.

For users, it will be a little like paying for an EPIC on an installment plan, so you don't have to bite the whole apple at once. Or only bite as much as you need, and get all the 4K+ goodness.

There will be a 2/3 model and an S35 model - 2/3 has desirable applications for 3D and documentary.

OK, I'll play.....

Scarlet will NOT have a 2/3 sensor.
Cheapest package will be $12,000
120fps at 3k
Will NOT have HDSDI out (only HDMI)
Most features will be same as EPIC but detuned.

Going on a limb: Scarlet will shoot 4k.

You guys who think it's S35, think RED is going to throw away 3 years of 2/3rd sensor and lens development?

Ungood grief. You know that from the beginning the scarlet work is based on the Epic work, and sensor is based on Reds sensor work, and lens follow rules that can be designed on computer, and much difference from that, like special matarials, moved accross to a new lens. Most of that does not take 3 year. Building on previouse work prototyping can relatively quickly be done, and changing uplens, sensor and Res more minor (though sensor not as simple, there are design rules and some commonality, but tuning pads an issue). It is not like they have to make a whole new system, if they did it would be. The volume of sales also pays for upgrades, the more it sells the camera, the more it pays for itself. Take the Sony near S35 sensor based nex 5n for $599, or the panasonic gh2, both great sensors for the price. Jim says larger sensors cost exponentially more, but volume gets the price down, and how many cents does the cheapest sensors cost. Reds access cost to expensive sensor chip foundary runs and techniques are also likely more. Having said that , sensors need to be locked down several months ago, and kead times fir ordering from the foundary is likely at least 3 months, though there is a recession on now, and may have already been produced in volume by the time of the tsunami. But we live in hope on this.

You can put 2/3rd lens on a bigger sensor with adaptor if it is larger, you don't need to sweat it too much.

So we are talking about modest improvements with 4k and s16, and 4/3 and s35 doable ideally.

2/3 3K for less than $4K (that would explain the " three of a kind beats 2 pair" and "If you were expecting 3K for $3K... this is bad news."), non fixed ("Scarlet is now a professional camera"). Electronic 8x zoom for $2K
