  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 13th... prep.

Please STOP this 1000 fps discussion !

Like Jim said, you just won't have it on the new cameras. So forget about it PLEASE, or make a thread. Don't turn this excitement into a tech war.

I agree, PLEASE STOP talking about this. If you what to talk about it, make a thread, otherwise please realize this thread about the upcoming Nov.13th date.

Video/motion isn't very interesting to me, and I had never heard of Red before the DSMC "DSLR killer" comment. Is any of this hype, and the announcement on Thursday, about that device, or is all of this just about Scarlet and Epic and other video products?

Wow, risky comment to make here.

Anyone know if other manufacturers are designing products to compete with RED, especially the Scarlet? (don't worry, my loyalty lies forever with RED)

What we know So far

What we know So far

1. there will be an announcement on the 13th

2. Scarlet won't shoot at 1000/fps

Did I miss anything?

I doubt any harm will come to me over an internet forum, especially when I'm interested in a supposed product of that company (DSMC) even though I couldn't care less about the company's other products.

Who friggin' cares if Scarlet could shoot 1000 fps or 1.2 beeeeeellion fps (yes, that's with beeeeeellion with a "b")? I like popsicles. Please discuss.

I thought the fact that Jim has the attention span of a ferret was an interesting trait for an entrepreneur's personality.

haha, calm down.

It's well documented that Jim only reads the first and last page of each thread. And even then, he only reads the first sentence of those posts.

...FORGET HIGH SPEED.
I am so surprised that simple fps is the corner stone of this conversation. Sensitivity, dynamic range, noise floor and pattern / compression scheme, data malleability, physical functionality, intersystem integration, more rez???...

Hear, Hear! 1000fps?! WTF? Whatever.

I'm very interested in the new RED cameras and would never think to hijack a thread, but all this talk of the value of 1000fps has me laughing. I mean, we do EXTREMELY well renting and selling Phantom cameras, and we only service the production market (as opposed to the technical and military markets, which go directly to Vision Research). If you only knew how many commercials used high speed, often very high speed. All of the food shots flying by at 700fps or so, car shots around the same, beauty products, etc. There are people who make their living shooting nothing else.

When we first got involved with Phantom, we wanted to show that high speed was not just a "novelty" but instead a creative, artistic tool. To that end Vision Research and Abel Cine Tech worked together with SuperFad to create a short promotional film done all on the Phantom HD. It's on our website along with some commericals, sports and art pieces, all shot with Phantoms. I really enjoy the Industria piece done for the Mexico Tourism Board (first piece on the COMMERCIALS page). Check 'em out and then tell me that there's little use for high speed.

I seriously agree with Mitch and Phil about that there is use for 1000 fps cameras. I would love to have my RED ONE doing stuff like this - eg. by using a smaller PAL sized window or the like. We may reach a couple of hundret FPS this way.

Anyhow, Jim clearly stated he / RED is not currently interested in much more than 150 fps. This is for the sake of the majority of the users. This is OK for me - especially considering the complexity of a full sensor high speed system.

Btw, there are clearly alternatives now to the Phantom. The latest for high speed is definetly the new PCO camera with 2K * 2K @ 1000 fps or 2K * 1K (HD...) @ 2000 fps, full color, 8/10/12 bits. Its priced at 65,000 Euros - so its cheaper and way better specs than the Phantom. Its the camera inside the new WeissCam, for those who do not know that. But you can always rent a little cheaper via PCO directly.

Yep, there is need for 1000 fps - I did quite some high speed shooting. But for now I take it roughly like Phil stated - keep it a little exotic, otherwise its becoming a visual inflation. And preserve my income :)

Looking forward to the latest news coming up.

Cheers,
Axel

I may add that the PCO sensor was developed by the same guys who did the Phantom sensor, but just a couple of years later - just for stopping any discussion that might pop up "why the Phantom must be better than the (unknown) PCO...".

And they did not the RED sensors, for sure...

:)

The 1,000 fps nonsense has bled this thread dry of any enjoyment. Lame.

I agree.

Im tired of the 1000fps talk. Red is digital cinema cameras and how many films have you seen with that kind of slow motion. In my opinion I just want scarlet to have amazing 24p with no stuttering, jittering, or jello problems. I also hope it stays under 3000 dollars.

I have to have a budget proposal due tomorrow, the 11th, for 8 cameras, which right now consists of 1 Red and a combo of 7 Pannys, HVX's and HPX's.

On the 13th I hope I have to resubmit my proposal for whatever Jim has come up with......

He didn't make a comment, he asked a question.

Remember when shutter angles other than 180 were considered a mistake unless dialing out a frequency issue(TV roll). Then came Saving Private Ryan. Now it's part of the cinematic language like anything else.
If we could shoot at a 360 deg shutter angle at 864 fps, then in post we could combine frames and dial in the 24 fps shutter angle in increments of 10 degrees. (I guess with 120 fps we could still do it in increments of 72 deg.) Ooh, now to come up with a use for a ramping shutter angle...

I think all the people begging others to stop discussing their opinions has made it super lame.

I'm excited for Thursday, and I'm glad I'll be on set(with my RED) so I won't be tempted to hang out hitting refresh all morning.
