  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 13th... prep.

FYI we did a number of Photosonics shots in "American History X" including Ed Norton showering, Ed Furlong getting shot etc (can't remember the other ones). 12 days of Photosonics in an 8 week schedule, helping Tony Kaye in his quest to burn a million feet of film (unbelievable on that budget).

We also brought the system in on "Mr. 3000" for a heightened sequence with a fastball being thrown at the camera at 1000 fps--you can read the lettering on the ball. Massive amounts of Lightning Strikes strobes used to build up the stop required. Cool shot in the movie, but you would never know it wasn't CGI (and would probably have been cheaper...)

Certainly 1000 fps for narrative is unusual, but like everything else it has its time and place with the right vision. However I do agree that cameras like the Phantom exist to cover this application. The unfortunate thing is that the camera rents for something like $4K a day with tech...

i bought a used "enigma" on ebay and have deciphered jims comments and here they are:

"We will release everything on Nov13th!"

and

"Everything will be matte black and not shiny, also may make you juice or coffee"

you can all go back to bed now, nothing to see here :)

Darts...

Jim

I'm imagining a dart board at RED with the entire board being labeled "TELL THEM NOW!!!!!!!" and the bulls eye being labeled "WAIT UNTIL THE 13TH."

Jim still can't find out who switched the labels, and is cursing his aim.

Haha... :)

Regarding the server overload, why not send all registered REDUsers an email with the full post and pictures so we're not overwhelming the site ourselves? Just a thought (EDIT: Red Recon is/has been my only RSS feed, but for those who don't have it set up... you know).

Can't wait (but... I am... anyway?)!

I have no choice but to go into hypersleep until Thursday. I'm consuming way too many resources to complete the journey if I remain conscious. Make sure the computer wakes me up when we get close to Jupiter...

understand your viewpoint Warren.. but again, showing cars blowing up in super-slow motion is not something "normal" filmmakers would necessarily want to use for story telling.. even for 3 seconds it is awkward when mixed with 24fps ( yes there are some exceptions, as mentioned commercials being one of them )

Jarred, if I may gently make a point, 1000fps can be a novelty which has very limited use or a great artistic tool for all kinds of expression. Our Phantom footage is some of the highest selling content we carry, especially the simple water shots.

That said, asking for 1000fps from Scarlet seems beyond reality. I hope that ultra slow motion look stays somewhat exclusive for a while. Can you imagine how overused the effect would be if all Scarlet users had access? Spare me! :)

i agree with you Phil... you said it perfectly, 1000fps is a novelty.

1000 fps in SD for scarlet.

Someone's already done that... I'm guessin' that Nov 13th is about RED doing something not yet done.

296,324...296,323...296,322...296,321

It would be good if you announce the date on the Red homepage. Otherwise only "insiders" will know when the information comes out.

regards.

Jim and Co.

I cannot emphasize how important frame rates up to 120 fps at full sensor is to the commercial world. I love how the R1 looks at 4K, but I need frame rates higher than 30. 3K is nice, and 2K is acceptable, but I am spoiled for 4K. Use the 435 or 35-III as a reference for the TV commercial world. I don't need 1000 fps, but 120 is critical.

Looking forward to Thursday.

Um, Jarrred, I think you missed my point. 1000fps can be used as a novelty OR a legitimate tool for artistic expression. We rarely see the second case for all the balloons bursting, car wrecks and guns firing. But I do agree with you that it doesn't belong on Scarlet. :)

Just curious... what the heck would you do with 1000fps?

Let me butt in here... I'm always on the lookout for more accessible ways to shoot really high frame rates. I occasionally shoot product test videos for corporate clients, but not quite enough to justify owning my own high-speed camera. There's other solutions out there, but they're specialized and expensive, many times the mere rental of a VisionResearch V-series (and especially a Phantom HD) are just out of reach for many jobs that really could benefit, or even require such a thing.

...As far as more creative uses for 1000fps, I can think of many ways to incorporate that into shooting extreme sports, wildlife, even fully narrative productions.

Jim, if EPIC can shoot frame rates of 480fps or faster, even at a significant crop of the sensor, I would buy one for that reason alone. But I'm not just about frame rates. I was excited over EPIC and Scarlet before and now that they have changed somehow, I'm drooling over specs I don't even know about.

I'm trying to wait patiently for the 13th, I'm sure you guys have loads of good stuff for show and tell.

BTW, I have a Photosonics for sale. Anyone interested?

Possibly interested. Which model? Although I'm probably happy to just continue renting a VR V7.3 on the occasions I need such a thing.

i think there's an unconscious draw to what everyone sees as the "cheap" offering from RED in contrast to the top-line EPIC so everyone is dreaming of 3K movies of their kids. i know i am :)

there will def be more Scarlets sold than EPICS even here on REDUser, i will have both :innocent:

Well Jim,

with announcements such as this, I know I have chosen the right path back when I decided to go "RED" and the more I work with the RED ONE, and have the chance to mingle and play with the "Toys" I also know that my Company couldn't be Established at a better time, "Exited" is a very small word to manifest the way I fill about the 13th, I admit I'm one of those Tech guys that wants the latest and the best tools available and always selling the holder for the newer, as OffHoolywood, called me, I'm a virtual garage sale:)

But I do, considered my self a true "ARTIST" above all, and look forward to the new tools coming from RED which will not make me a better FilmMaker, but will for sure help me tell my stories and help deliver a higher quality product.

If I was still in California, I would definitely come by with some more "LASAGNA" and "TIRAMI SU'" for you guys, as it sounds your team really deserves some good treats.

Keep up the Fantastic work you all, I'm here, like thousands of other REDUSERS, in support of RED!

ciao
