So here is what I think, Remember how epic had the modest version for $12,000 that was basically a restricted epic? Remember how they conveniently disposed of that luscious choice that all the Indy film makers wanted. Well I'm not holding that against RED, I think they did that in a positive way. I honestly believe Red is really in this business for the customer, and are not a capitalist money hungry Corporation. So in saying this, I think Red just said F it. I think they cancelled that model in plans of making the scarlet replace it. Taking on a S35 sensor, and maybe just possibly 4k at a lower data rate. why would they sell 1,000 of those when they can easily reduce cost and beef up the scarlet and sell 10,000. ( just a figure ) But to maintain the idea... 1,000 units @ $12,000 a camera will profit 12 million and probably another 3 million in accessories = 15 million. Instead take a $8,000 beast that makes that whole range of customers die for the product, $8000 x 10,000 units = 80 mil, and selling 20 mil in accessories = 100 MILLION. So say a 10 mil loss on production cost thats still 90mil vs 15 mil ( And Thats only if there are 10,000 buyers). Which If this does happen as I think, There will be at least 100,000 buyers. (guesstimate) Thats probably how many passionate Dslr users will upgrade alone who would buy the Scarlet in that case.
