Let me ask a better question this time.

What are the differences between the two? What does the Red Plugin offer in addition to FCPX's native support? Most of the info I'm reading covers FCP7.

FCPX's native support is just that; support. It is only one piece of the puzzle. It noes not do anything by itself. FCPX requires the Red plugin in order to access and manipulate Redcode.

FCP7 does not have native Red support as I'm sure you know.

The plugin download includes a PDF that explains it's function better than I can. Download and read it.

As a side note I find it a funny coincidence that native Red support in FCPX and a Red ProRes module became available within a short time of each other. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during those negotiations. I wonder if they were as interesting as I imagine them.
