  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NOTES FROM ASC: SONY F65 ON "After Earth"

You'd expect a spinning shutter to make some noise, but it would be less than a film camera running film through the gate -- and a 35mm Panaflex has been considered quiet enough to shoot sound movies with, so I don't see why the F65 would be worse than a film camera... and likely to be much quieter.

Of course, this was from a mixers point of view, so it doesn't take into account:
A) what the sound recordist was/wasn't doing to mitigate the noise on set
B) if conditions were amplifying the noise
C) if there was a flaw with this particular camera that couldn't be fixed (The impression I got was this wasn't a high budget production they had been talking about, I imagine they were getting the camera at a reduced rate. I imagine in the full service world a replacement would have been offered up if a flaw was detected.)
D) If it was misdiagnosed as the mechanical shutter but was actually some other culprit.

Not wanting to spread misinformation or FUD, as always, test your camera/workflow on all shoots for your needs. But it is a point of difference I imagine between a mechanical shutter and say the magic mount, that the mechanical shutter is more likely to make some noise.

We all know cameras on any shoot can have issues (I have been on a shoot where the fuse blew on an Sr-16 and being a low budget short a replacement couldn't be got that day - all cameras have failure points and peculiarities) The potential for a mechanical shutter to make noise is just one of those things to weigh up and test, especially given Sony doesn't have as large a track record with mechanical shutters as say Arri or Panavision.

Thanks Mr. Mullen.
Indeed, our F65 is silent.
This thread is just a string of nonsense, created with obvious agendas and based on nothing even close to truth.

That's why we tell you both pixel array numbers on the sensor and we've also shown measured resolution and MTF on these forums.

any chance to show Dragon's MTF charts? I know Dragon is beast but like videos Mark Toia and others posted pretty inaccurate for me.Bet Toia would shoot awesome footage with 5D mk3 too :)
im a simple guy just want to see Aliasing Resolution DR charts like you posted for MX vs Alexa.
would be perfect if we see how Dragon looks against F65 (not counting Alexa since F65 beating that like a bitch on every level)

I'm sure Dragon MTF charts will come at some point, although I'd guess you're looking at a 20% linear improvement over Epic based on pixel count. Dragon, of course, has more pixels to make up the image than the F65....
