My RED ONE was stolen the morning of Sat Dec 13th from my casting studio in Hollywood. Camera body only.

#5501
I would appreciate any information if it turns up,

Marcus

Sucks!

Let us know if anything else was stolen and we will all keep our eyes open! I would recommend faxing/emailing the list to all the local rental houses as well.

In other news... Red #5501 has been delivered?!? Wow. Wonder what number they are up to?

RED 5501

I will keep my eyes open at every shoot I go to.

Red #5501 RETURNED

Red #5501 RETURNED

Thanks for anyone who was going to keep their eyes open for my RED #5501. One of my studio renters accidentally took it with their equipment and returned it as soon as they realized it.

We have insurance, but literally paid for it last night at 5pm, and we weren't sure if the payment had gone through or not. We've only had the camera 2 days. Whew!

Thanks again everyone!

Marcus

...accidentally took the RED ONE body? You mean like as in "accidentally grabbed the wrong keys or cell phone"?

I think you're being kind to the guy/gal that found out a stolen RED ONE is essentially worthless on the open market or otherwise, considering the Meta Data Protection, had a change in heart and returned it with that lame excuse.

I had a camera stolen once, and it was costly both in time and money. It seems to me that Red could have an embeded list of stolen cameras in the firmware build upgrades to disable the camera when an upgrade is attempted on a stolen camera. A message would flash "camera needs servicing" on all screens. Only the registered user would be able report a stolen camera to prevent mischief. Insurance companies might even give Red owners a slight financial break if such a theft deterent was in place, although I am not going to hold my breath on that one.

Now, THAT is a gem idea!

The problem with any disabling technology is the very real spectre of false positives... in all likelihood the system would shut the camera off by accident more often than from an actual theft. The first time that your camera was bricked on set would be the last time you thought this to be a good idea.

A "phone home" embedded in Red's software, triggered if it opens footage from a camera who's serial number has been reported stolen, would be a viable option. Even if false positives were a problem, it wouldn't be an on set show stopper.
