Hi All,

What's peoples experiences with the Epic and which IR ND is best. I've shot a heap on the Red One-MX but not so much on the Epic. I'm wondering is a standard IRND filter from Schneider at 1.2, 1.5, 1.8 and 2.1 sufficient to cut the IR light or is it recommended to get a Hot Mirror and combine it with normal NDs at similar strengths...

Thanks in advance :-)

I am looking into this question after my lovely 1.8 panchro mirror hit the concrete :-(. Thinking of the Tiffen IRND which go up to 2.1 ND and the Schneider Platinum IRND but availability seems problematic. t
The Pancro 1.8 was super clean but it's reflective qualities made filter stacking difficult. I would love to be able to see a test between the Tiffens and Schneiders and how they work with the Epics sensor. I would do the test if I could get my hands on them.

ps. Worked with your wife on a shoot the other day

Just got the S Platinum's today - .3, .9 and 1.5 (like production / prototypes . . . because I kinda of a badass) . . . will shoot over the weekend and report back it I end up needing them. YouTube test look very good

I used the Tiffen IRNDs with a hot mirror. (not my choice but had to due to availability). The Tiffen iRNDs that were provided are described by Tiffen as unsuitable for RED sensors without an additional hot mirror. I noticed color shifts during shooting (green) with various strengths of the ND. I don't recommend them. The Schneider Platinums look very good based on the tests I've seen.

Based on my tests, Tiffen IR NDs 1.2-1.8 did a much better job than their Schneider counterparts. The Tiffen IR 1.5 and 1.8 still require a Schneider 750 IR filter in front to fully filter out IR. Have yet to test the Platinums. I would avoid the regular Schneider IR NDs, they don't play well with Red.

We used Panchro hot mirrors on our Red One and now our EPICs without a problem. Not generally a fan of stacking more than an IR and a pola.

I read the suggested Schneider IR filter for the Epic is the 680, am I wrong? do you find the 750 enough?
are you still using the same setup?
thanks for sharing your findings Satsuki!!!
