And it's not only for the metal piece, but for the electronics in it.
Also, the mount will hold some expensive lenses, and REDs locking mechanism is the best system for Canon lenses that I have seen; far surpasses Canon's own solution.

Does RED sell the AL canon mount separately? I couldn't find it on the store and was really hoping to... even at $750. Honestly, if the non-RED mount was cheap enough and had proper back focus, I wouldn't mind a (much) cheaper alternative to the $2000 Ti mount (even if it was a dummy Canon mount)... doubly true since I don't intend to use any massive/heavy telephoto canons.
