Don't get me wrong... I think that todays announcement is amazing. I'm totally stoked for the S35-X. However, I am a seriously disappointed in the lack of workflow news.

I don't know if I had any specific expectations, but with Nov. 13th being all about the camera, I was kind of hoping that the 3rd would be all about the workflow. Maybe an official announcement for Adobe? Maybe a whole new release of RedAlert/RedCine/SDK with audio support and finally bringing them all out of their perpetual "Beta" status? A W32 DirectShow R3D codec? Announcements of new third-party support? Anything.... Sadly, nothing.

With the 13th followed by the 3rd, without any progress made on the workflow front, it feels like Workflow is becoming the bastard child of RED.

I know there is a lot of time for developments between now and the release of the first Epics, and as much as I'm excited for the new cameras, I'm not completely inclined to dive into the hype without first having the RED workflow revisited.

agreed. Workflow is certainly getting the shaft. Considering more and more projects are using RED to shoot, workflow should be priority number one. It wouldn't be outrageous to think - enough with the new product announcements until a rock solid pc workflow is banged out. On a side note the latest 12/3 announcements smell more like a carrot to protect and prop up R1 sales than anything else. I have to believe that sales have slowed dramatically considering the cheap rental rates and the devastated state of the global economy. It seemed like the wait time for the RED dropped from months to none in a matter of days...

Anyway maybe Im just frustrated cuz I have 3 TB of R3D's waiting for an Adobe plugin....

NAB 2009 will the deliver the holy grail(s) of RED workflow. watch out for the post software RED solutions at the next NAB....yes, it's not today, but it is only four short months away.

Nah. When the SDK is complete then we'll see real workflow.

I'm not interested in what RED is doing anymore. Real workflow is going to come from their partners and the SDK developers.

I want to agree with you Gavin, but I am one of those SDK developers, and I've got nothing... Okay, that's not fair, I do have the SDK for win/mac, and they are functional, but in the big picture of workflow, they are functionally incomplete and equally limited.

If you're right about the workflow coming from their partners and SDK developers, then I'm trying to understand the issue at hand with Adobe right now, where they say "It's available from RED", and RED says "It's not available." If you are right, RED should be focusing exclusively on the SDK, and Adobe should be releasing their own plugin, without any relation or caveat to RED.

Its just been really silent on the workflow front, from just about everyone, and that typically is indicative of one of two outcomes: Something really amazing not far down the road... Or nothing at all. RED hasn't been much for being quiet when things are in the pipeline, so it leave me nervous about "Nothing at all."

Are you just referring to the speed of transcode or lack of realtime functionality?

I have found the post options great. Not real time, but I didn't expect that.

At the moment I am working with 1.2 Terabytes of footage. I put it on to transcode to SD ProRes (for editing and DVD) yesterday and it's just about ready to work with.

If I sent 12 hours of film to the lab, I wouldn't expect to have done a 1-light and be editing the next day.

As machines improve and more options come online it will only get easier, but I am really happy with the capabilities right now.

The direct to Color update was a fantastic move in the right direction. Short form stuff is a breeze now.

Doesn't transcoding to ProRes allow you to work in real time? Or were you talking about working with the camera's 4K R3D files?

Yeah, I meant real time right out of the camera. ProRes is great! Especially now that you can edit ProRes and then relink to R3D in Color.

If I had shot 12 hours of Digi or HD, I would have had to capture from tape, babysitting the deck every 90 minutes.

Dropping all the footage into RedRushes and going to bed was very nice.

When I think of the hours of my life wasted babysitting a tape machine digitizing footage!

No more!

And hopefully transcoding will also soon be just a bad memory.
