I shot a bunch of 5k at 29.97 base frame rate today. Alot of it we shot at 60fps varispeed.
No matter what I do it plays back regular speed. New red-cine x pro and slightly older one.
4k 29.97 x 120 fps works just fine. Id Love some help. I have a lot of nervous people including myself awaiting a resolution. Thanks

It could be an RCX Pro bug. RCX Pro is really still beta, and crashes on me rather a lot. (despite which I have a generally very positive impression of the software.)

Try Resolve Lite and RCX not pro to see if they play back properly. If you have it check Premiere Pro.

If you have the same issue in all those apps ... then there may be a problem with the .r3d files.

So I tried a non-pro RCX and Premiere Pro. I have the same problem in both softwares. This is major issue. The camera gave no notice that it wasn't properly recording the frame rates. In the file's metadata it says that it was recorded at the frame rate. I'd much appreciate it if someone from RED could take a look at my .r3d.

Thanks

Did quick tests on Epic M at 5k, 29.97 project, 30, 60 & 96 fps. All look as expected as to motion speed appearance in RCX Pro. Better check metadata again.

Thanks for the test Michael. Are you on the newest firmware?
In REd Cine Pro, in the meta data - I have frame rate as being 29.97 and recorded frame rate as being 59.97.
Everything I shot was shot at vari-speed 60fps in the camera.

Metadata for my 60fps vari-speed clip shows 59.94 record frame rate with 29.97 project rate. Latest firmware and Rcx pro 2.
On the road in Nevada and Idaho rest of today (yes, with Epic M and 300 mm at the ready).

I want to understand this correctly.

You set the camera to 29.97 Time base.
You set the varispeed menu to 60fps

The footage plays back at normal speed instead of slow motion half speed.

Am I correct on all of this?

Have you rendered a test clip?
Have you opened the file in a release build of the software?

David

Thanks for your attention David

So full yes to all of the above. It would appear that on many clips the 60 fps just didn't catch. The actual file size doesnt match 60 fps. But just so yo know I'm not stupid or crazy- the meta data says 59.94 on the 'recorded' field. It says 29.97 on the format field.

The worst is that I cannot replicate the error this morning. But I havnt changed a single setting in the camera. I have not shifted the project from 5k 29.97.

I am 99% sure this is not a user error. I have literally hundreds of days experience shooting Red One and an array of other cameras. The entire shoot I was looking at 60fps on the top left of the LCD and 1/120 shutter speed (set to relative of course). All the 4k 29.97 shot at 60fps and 120 fps works. As does the 2k 29.97 240 fps.

At least if I could replicate the error then I would know what to steer clear of. As much as I hate the word- this feels 'random'.

In my mind- I was hit by an interrmittent bug. We were shooting on an ice rink and there were some other symptoms of non happiness in the Epic. It freezed a couple of times and I had to reboot. The reference on the LCD and HDSDI monitor also was showing some latency.

I would be doing a clean install on that machine with a Black shading...

:)

You mean a new firmware?

which version are you on?

Clean install = re-download FW from Red Site and install again. Don't use the same file you already have incase it is corrupt.
Then Black balance.

Ive shot a ton of off speed stuff and never had an issue (knocking on wood)

also.

Send a camera log file to deanan at RED. Make sure RED sees the camera log file. They are the very best people to trouble shoot this kind of thing.

David

Thanks boys!

Firmware upgrade and black balance has seemed to stop crashes and the slow mo problems.
Doesn't fix my old clips though. I guess I'll have to get familiar with twixtor to rescue that.

Thanks so much
