  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No really... Overexpose or Underexpose the Red?

Is everyone shooting with RED rating the camera as ISO 320? Anyone rating at ISO 500?

I don't think the noise would be that bad, specially downscaling from 4K to SD or even 1080p.

I've read that rating the meter at 320 would not give the right exposure in the RED One, is that because of all the color space problematics?

I'm not sure where you read that, pretty much everyone including RED has said that 320 is the optimum rating for the sensor, at least for DR.

Personally, I find that if you shoot anything above 320, you're asking for noise. 500 is often acceptable, and you can even shoot higher if you plan on using a third party "de-noiser", but really, if you're underexposed at 320, you're not using enough light.

At daylight color temps, the primary color channels get roughly equal exposure. At 3200k tungsten, there is a four stop difference between blue and red channels uncorrected due to the change in spectrum of the light. You are eating half your practical dynamic range just to compensate with a center exposure giving you two stops under on blue and two stops over on red. Some filtering of either the lights or the camera to reduce the red/blue difference will actually give you more practical latitude to work with even if you under expose.
