  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No one in R1 forum seems to know...

So I have a relatively new to me R1MX and I picked up 3 320GB Red Drives and 2 totally healthy looking red drive cables from a fellow user. When I plug then into the R1MX, the camera just says no digmag. These are the facts:

- When I plug the drives into a PC via USB2 the work fine. Blank drives formatted in FAT32
- When I plug the drives in via either of the red drive cables (only cable i need?) to the back of the camera, I can here the drives fire up and they continue to spin/run
- I have tried restarting with the drives attached, and swapping with the camera running and waiting 15m+ for the camera to find the drives, no dice
- I updated the R1MX to latest firmware
- I plugged in one of my SSDs while having the drive attached, got a weird msg for a sec about slow media, then was able to format the SSD and it would record, but only to the SSD

Anyone have any thoughts? Could it be however the drives were formatted? I read somewhere that they were supposed to be formatted in FAT not FAT32, but when I try to format them as FAT on my pc I get an error msg that the drives are too big. Could really use some help here.

- I would think the port was bad, but the drives fire up when plugged in and at what appears to be the appropriate time.

- I would think I have a faulty drive/cable, but I have 3 drives and two cables and no combo seems to work.

- I do not have another R1 to test on unfortunately, just an Epic Dragon.

HELP LOL

Tomorrow I am going to:

- Reset camera defaults

- Try formatting a fresh 32gb partition on the Red Drive using the native windows utility.

- Investigate the master boot record settings on the formatting.

- Try deep formatting on PC, maybe just a 32gb partition to save time

Anyone else have any other ideas?

It should be formatted FAT32 in the computer, but if you can then get it to mount on the camera you also need to format the drive on the camera (which writes a couple of ID files) for recording.
Check you can write and read files off the Red Drive on the computer.

Check you are seeing 320GB (more or less) of capacity. Red Drives are 2.5" hard drives in RAID0. If it's only 160GB then one of the drives is toast.

Can you talk to the person you bought the camera and Red Drives & drive cables from - surely the seller(s) tested them before selling them?

Drive cables are the usual suspects for weak links, and they need to be babied.
Check for bent/missing pins in the cables and/or in the camera connector. Use a multimeter to check continuity of all the pins.

You should only need the one Red Drive cable for it to work.

Red Drives should ideally be powered from the mains adapter rather than using USB or Firewire bus power, although plenty of users seem to have got away with bus power, Red does not recommend it.

Hi are you still dealing with your R1 issue because I'm having the exact same issue. What was your resolution if you solved it?

I'd suggest buying ssd mags while there cheap now

Now I understand your issue the prongs are push to far back due to the 3rd party cable they used. I purchased a cable from amazon for power and one for my drive but I noticed when I used them they would lock into position and I had to push them all the way into the port. I stopped because one.... it scared the hell out of me so I put the red cables in and they worked. Those 3rd party cable pins are too long so when you push them in they will actually push the connectors back so when you use the Red cables which have the proper short pins it will not connect and the only way to fix the issue is to ship the camera to them. Its worth the repair cost Due to that camera being a beast. $500 transfer fee or have the first owner send it in because its his fault or get a refund. If he acts up hold the camera and sue his ass for selling you a defective device. he may say he will pay for the port repair.

I had one drive where the internal header plug that connects the cable loom from the Lomo to the circuit board became slightly dislodged: that caused the drive not show up on the camera. Just needed reseating and all was well.

Maybe try to format the good drives on the camera and also format the messed up one on the computer, and then copy the files that are on the working drives to the non working drive so they look similar to the camera when you plug it in. Just a suggestion.
If the the drive is not showing up not he camera check the pins and connection on the drive.. That would be my first idea on whats going on.
Good luck.

"Either" ?

Just to be sure - did you connect both cables ?
Power and data ?

Any luck on this issue? I am having the same exact problem. Two days on set with no issues. Off loaded the files and put the 640gb red drive back on the R1...no digimag attached. Drive reads in the computer just fine. Reformatted it in the computer and no luck.

Any thoughts?

No! If it's a 320gb drive you need to format it to 320GB.
You don't want to be making smaller partitions.
It needs to be a FAT 32 partition.
