Love the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display, but a little disappointed that there was no word about new MacPros :(

AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!! Why Apple? Why?

no MacPro, OK, I'll deal w/it but at least give us a road map to what, aside from the MacBook Pro, will be "pro" at Apple. An iMac Workstation a-la HP's Z1 would have been a welcome announcement.

According to the http://www.macrumorslive.com/ transcript they referred to the MacBook Pro as the "new flagship line". That sounds like a declaration that the tower's days are nearing the end. Did anyone who was there get that same sense?

OK - sincere question here - if I can get a fast, multi-core MacBook Pro (or iMac, I suppose) with lots of fast RAM, Thunderbolt plus fast external drives of my choice (RAID whatever), an expansion chassis for various cards, a large, hi rez external display - all connected via Thunderbolt, what am I missing as compared to a Mac Pro?

Well, Red Rocket is only 80% fast through thunderbolt compared to PCI... There is one thing. 20% speed loss for expansions. Not much else comes to mind though.

There is a new Mac Pro, but no thunderbolt and only USB 2. So based on my quick look, I think it's only a minor CPU upgrade.

I asked that same question, but more so w/an iMac rather than MacBook Pro. I spent a lot of time this past NAB trying to figure out what I would do should Apple nix the MP. As powerful as an iMac or MBP is/are these days, the question revolves around how powerful one can make either sys w/external thunderbolt expansion. Currently I run an NVidia Quadro 4800, RR and AJA Kona 3 in my MP. My Smoke on Mac runs pretty damn good w/them so naturally I'd like to keep the trio running in a news system. Sonnet did not have a 3 card Thunderbolt solution. Magma has a 3 card chassis so I guess I'll start my exploration there. The other road block - memory. HP's Z800 maxes out at 192Gb. so a new MP would have likely been right up there. With were we're headed, 16GB on an iMac just isn't going to cut it... Literally ;O)

I still wouldn't rule it out. There have been times like this before where they released an upgrade a day or two after the announcement. If it's strictly an upgraded processor and thunderbolt expansion, it may not have made the keynote.

LOVE the new MacBooks. As much as I love my MacbookAir, I may give up the additional pound for the power and Retina Display.

They barely upgraded them.... new processors, but that's it... still the same GPUs (no NVIDIA cards at all!), still only 2 X16 PCIe 2.0 slots (couldn't even go 3.0?!), NO USB3, NO THUNDERBOLT.

Forget it, Apple. I'll stick with my iMac and when it's time to get something more powerful, I'll have to bite the bullet and get a PC to be my editing and render workstation.

Too bad.

Cuda cores can't be hit over thunderbolt. Not yet at least.

Embarassing update after 2 years waiting...

The thing is, you can't. Fast multicore would be a dual xeon, better if they are eight cores each. Lots of ram would be at least 48GB upto 128GB or even 256GB on some mobos, PCIE 3.0, etc. So, you loose the workstation performance thing, and you end up with a modular thing with less features and raw power of a regular PC at a much higher cost.

AAAAARGH !!!!

AAAAARGH !!!!

Firstly, sorry for my poor english, but I think anger has no frontiers !!

For me, the worst in all this mess is not the dead of the Mac pro….
ok, this is business thing….. I don't accept it, but I can understand this kind of thing….
but, as an adult, and a professional, I can't accept at all that someone, a professional supplier,
tell me "yeah man, I have a new item…. in fact a new item with a down-grade to a less chip… a f```king 2,4ghz !!! And you will pay it 200$ more !!!!"

Yes…. 200$ for 6 more gigas of RAM !!
This kind of speech is good for a young consumer of mobile device…. not a pro !!!
Who are we for you Apple ??!
Peanuts ??! Just.... wind ???!

Say to us, "it's over"…. and break with us…..
but don't take us for stupid fool !!!!

So… now….. once again, I'm a pro….
I have to go on the road again, and I have to finally use my loan
and buy the computer I have been wainting for nothing, since 3 years !!!
Now, what can I do ??

Where can I install my Smoke 2013 ??
Where can I use my Resolve ???!
All my Adobe stuff ???!

On a Windows PC ??
I was PC before, for decade…. and I don't want to come back….
don't fell comfortable on that….. waste more time trying to make it working, than working on my real work !!

On Linux ?
With pleasure !!!
But….. oh, shit….. where's photoshop ??!

And…. I don't want to lose all my professionnal apps….
I wait years for a "perfect" Autodesk Smoke…. a good grading apps….
and now that the best is here, there's no computer to handle it ??!!!

Wait few month for an new iMac ?
Yes….. a mac mini, with a big screen…… come on !!!
Read and compress 5K RED footage on real time ?
And without burn the computer in one night of render ??
And..... glossy screen ???????!!!!!!!!!!!

Or the Hackintosh ?
Can someone confirm that there is no more bug in an hack than in a real mac and I sign now !!

Well……… I'm lost….. and angry….. and sorry for all the exclamation mark !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A two year wait and all we get is what amounts to a minor cpu and hard drive upgrade - exactly like last time?
Where's Thunderbolt? Where's USB3?
Come on, Apple. This is just sad.
