  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No NAB for RED...

Ok you got footage and photos. How do you know it's from a Scarlet and not just from a Red One or a still camera? Details? You can't shoot video with words and 3d renders. Hey, I'm just being the doubting Thomas. Let's see a camera we can buy (excluding the Red One camera) and use and I'll shut up. Personally, I'd love to see a Scarlet with all its glory, but there needs to be a pissed off consumer or two here to put a little urgency to their promises. Frankly, if Red doesn't get it into gear, then someone else will come along and swipe more customers. It's already happened. The clock is ticking. The meter's running. There are deadlines in all business. Jannard says that "everything in life changes", including consumer's attention span. My "mouth" is speaking what others fear to say. Their decision not to go to NAB is of little importance. NAB is expensive and perhaps not worth the effort. Their decision not to start selling or taking orders on a working camera near the promised date is bad business, especially when such hype has been built up over the past several months. Personally, I can't see Jannard going to work tomarrow and not saying just what I've said here.

I know for a fact that Jims goal is to make the best camera possible, quality first over everything, even over losing some customers that need to buy before the line comes out.

hehe... We are passing off RED ONE footage as new Scarlet footage? Did you really just say that? GFY (good for you) comes to mind.

Trust me, I won't think a thing about your post after I respond. Competition? Buy it. Near the promised date? Which one?

It is a miracle that we are still in business without listening to you more. :-)

The fact that Jim comes on here at 11:30 at night to interact with his customer base should tell you everything you need to know. The guy is committed to making cameras. If this was so easy, why isn't everyone making 4K cameras?

There isn't a single camera company out there capable of doing what Red is doing. No one else has the smarts, expertise, balls, visionary leadership or personal passion necessary to drive innovation through an open community process like Red.

Does Sony post what's going on with their products and development cycle? Does Panavision or Arri tell you what they plan to deliver to the market? Does Apple let you in on their design process? Fuck no.

They announce and deliver product without exposing anything to the outside world. Just like virtually every other company out there.

Oh, and that bit about hype building up over the past several months being "bad business?"... Red has sold 5000 cameras at about $20K a pop, plus a whole lot of accessories and lenses. Seems like a pretty good business model to me.... And they are just warming up.

Personally, I think we'll be reading a Harvard Business Case Study on Red one day, if there isn't one already.

So maybe you should find something else to whine about. If you're not happy with what Red is doing, go buy something else and don't waste your time on this board.

Oh, BTW, it's "tomorrow."

Jim has what we call a "track record". People trust Jim, because he has delivered for them, in spades. We know these shots come from Scarlet because we know Jim and friends are trustworthy. They have delivered in the past and they will continue doing so in the future.

I also think that many people, after talking to him in the forums and in person, like Jim a lot. He is honest. When he messes up, he admits it. When he misses a deadline, he tells us why. When he is triumphant, he brags. This builds up an emotional connection, not like romantic love, but a lot like the love people feel for, say, their favorite sports team. We're all rooting for Jim to do Great Things.

Canon recently updated their mid-line $3,999 high definition cameras. Their update made their cameras about 5% better than the previous models. I am sure the updates came out precisely on schedule and on budget.

Every time Jim makes something, he shoots for 100% better than the best of what was available in the past. This means huge changes and difficult design decisions, some of which need to be revised during development. This is a far less predictable process than improving something by 5%, so the time RED products emerge is inherently unpredictable. As Jim himself says, if this bothers you, buy the Canon. You'll never get products that touch greatness, but maybe that's not what you want.

Dude, people like you are old news to Jim. You forget that he's been hearing from very uneducated people, like yourself for a couple years now about how Red is a scam and vaporware and all the other BS.

I mean, what's the point of what you are trying to do. All anyone does here is read what you say and laugh at how stupid you just made yourself sound.

... My "mouth" is speaking what others fear to say. .. .

David, You seem to be confusing fear with patience, trust and respect.

There's an old saying. 'You have one mouth and two ears, try to use them in equal proportion.'

Just got my RED One back from upgrades - RED cleaned the sensor, installed the I pin connector, new audio board, Build 17 with the 1:1 zoom in focus assist, brand new mini to full size XLR cables, even put in new body screws for the ones I misplaced when I put on my LW rod support, paid for shipping FED X both ways - FREE. That's a hell of a deal on a camera that should have cost me, what, $100k?

I think its a REALLY good idea for Jim and Co. to NOT take deposits. I don't take deposits on my equipment - just better to make the stuff and sell when ready. I think it's quite a gift for them to even have this site and respond about gear in development.

If I had to shoot a film in the next 6 months with a sub $5k cam, I'd certainly hope for Scarlet but would be very happy with HVX200 or Sony EX1 or maybe even Canon 5D as well. How could I be upset with RED? They hit one out of the park with RED One, bases loaded, so no need to "prove" themselves to anyone.

As far as film technology goes it's all good these days.

I know lots of guys who are very good at what they do, but don't do it for a living. I'm shooting a rock band that does this very thing. I don't do this for a living, but I do an OK job at it and get paid for it. I don't even advertise because I would be too busy - word of mouth only. I enjoy the creativity and challenge of videography. But what you have here is a camera that has potential to allow you to do great things, but also is within the reach of many people's pocketbook. I didn't go to the Sundance Film Festival. I just ski there. I want to buy a nice HD camera, but most of what I see right now is not found on just one camera. I can't go out buying a bunch of cameras and have it be obsolete a few months later. I have one of those already. If Red is trying to appeal to just a professional market, why then the seemingly low price? Promised date? I do recall reading here that NAB was the day orders were going to be taken for one version of the Scarlet due this Summer.

We are a bit different because we "think out loud". We have been quick to say that things "can and will change"... actually from the beginning. We give our best estimate of what's happening. If something changes, we say so. Sometimes it is good news... like more features and lower prices. Sometimes it is bad news... like delays. We have asked if people want us to change the methodology and have heard a resounding "NO". And we can't take orders at NAB... because we won't be there. :-)

Jim

Ok. So should I buy another camera and not have the funds to buy yours later? I'll need two BTW. Not in too much of a hurry, but people are showing up with their consumer hd cams and it's annoying. Some show up with some P2 cams though. Fortunately, they can't shoot worth a crap and my editing is still impressive enough to keep the referrals coming - more than I want actually.

Scarlett/Epic Waiting

Scarlett/Epic Waiting

Jim is correct when he says that his company "thinks out loud". By doing that he and RED open themselves up for excitement and frustration. But in this new era of 'transpanency' I welcome it.

I can wait for Epic and Scarlett. Wait long enough for Jim and the gang to make the best camera possible for the moment.

I shoot 35mm most of the time. But I also shoot RED. And I have shot with genesis when it is appropriate.

The fact that I will be able to turn my RED in for FULL trade-in is an amazingly new business model. If I bought a Prius for 25,000 and then 3 years later Toyota said that I could trade it in for a Camry (at 35,000) and get a full trade-in on my 25,000 what would you think.

Red One is not the perfect camera. No camera is perfect for every situation. But it worked for "Knowing". My camera just worked for a shot for "Book of Eli"

What is amazing is that Jim is solidly behind supporting us through all of this. I don't fear that RED will abandon us.

Peter
