  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No NAB for RED...

Yeah, I made that mistake with a business card once.

I think having a RED Day makes perfect sense. With the announcement of such a unique product line, it seems appropriate to have an event entirely dedicated to the system. :}

I think it's a great decision. I was a consultant for Sony in development of the DVCAM system, and the entire (very large) company was paralyzed from Jan - April. The Red team can now stay on task and put that very large energy commitment into the new line. The quality and features of the gear will rise to the top, not the marketing.

I worked for a broadcast tech company from '98-'03 and I definitely remember thinking that the resources could be better spent on other things rather than trade shows on certain occasions.

We used to do almost every large show and several other smaller ones each year. And, like RED, we had much of the booth made and operated by the same folks that were normally working at the office... so without a new working product to show and with the current economic situation, plus the fact that internet / user generated marketing is the new model, I totally agree with Jim's decision to sit this one out.

Who knows, the climate may be different next year, or for IBC, but I still think it would be a good idea to have a RED sponsored presence in the form of a REDUser gathering/party, where third party products can be demoed and the RED community can continue to grow and bond.

Few more years tops? That's quite a proclamation considering there were 120,000+ attendees last year.

Not everyone wants to slog through all these internet forums to figure out what's up. Some have better ways to spend their time and would rather allot a few intense days to evaluate new products.

Yeah, this talk is silly. It is a trend to eliminate tradeshows and do these smaller internal shows. However, give it a couple years and the trend will be back to have a giant public pissing match on who can have the bigger booth! You know how these CEO's make it to where they're at? By being extremely competitive with one another...so, once the competition swings back the other way, trade shows will be all the rage. Bet on it. :-)

Hi,

I wonder if her RED business card still has her personal mobile phone no. I guess just the first run of cards:poster_oops:

guys.. ebay w/ them :whistling:

NAB is a great place to go ever 2 to 3 years. We find the most amazing tools there that we would have never have known existed other wise.
It should never be missed going too at least once in your life time if your in this industry.
Regardless of that, If RED are not ready then it makes sense not to go.
I'm so cool and happy with my RED cameras right now that I don't care about any show and tell event.
I'll wait till I see the EPIC in action and like most, I'll vote with my wallet.

Go RED GO!

By the way happy new year to you all.

and it was organized by a user group... a well established pretty strong one, but still...

a NAB event well organized by this UG could attract much attention

Totally bummed. This is to be my first NAB and RED was #1 on my list.

Having been to CES & SEMA for many years with Rockford Fosgate I can speak first hand that trade shows are about more then just showing the latest products, it's about building a brand. I realize that RED has done an amazing job creating their brand thus far, but I'm just feeling a little let down that I won't finally be able to put faces to names and see some products in person. Internet marketing and renders are really swell, but they lack that human touch.

what thread?

Steve, could you post a link to the thread you mentioned, can't seem to find it... unless you refer to the party poll thread

For those of you that use FCP, it's a great time.. A shot at the gifts is well worth the price of admission even though I came up empty. Bring some extra money. They sell extra tickets if your interested.

Have fun

Too bad, it was fun to meet all of you once a year.

Oh well...

Maybe i'll spend more time on workflows...

thanks for the info.

Antoine

My feelings too. For us it was one of the only times we get to hook up with all the other RED movers and shakers. No NAB for us either this year.

I have to say..... I go to NAB every other year (Skipping 08'). Red's reason for not going is understandable but this trend, like Apple trying to reach people on there on terms and venues is bad. NAB gives me the one place that I can see everything and talk to the people that I need to in one 4 day vacation.

If RED is now going to hold their own events that would mean I would have to book extra hotel rooms, plane tickets, food and so on to check out and hold a product for 20 minutes (which I would spend in the Red both anyways if they were at NAB). Imagine having to do this for every product I was interested in. I would hope all small trade shows would go away and everyone goes to something like NAB. That way companies like RED only need to plan one event every year.

Well, while I understand the current reason for Red concentrating on finalizing the product rather than showing more dummies - as indeed Jim has said, I do hope they don't continue the trend of forsaking shows in future, like Apple and others.

I go to IBC in Amsterdam every year and if Red hadn't been there in 2007 I would never have ordered my Red One. In 2008 Red just had a lounge to meet and chat - and that was invaluable. Ted was a great help to me as a tyro user and really set me on the road to success with the camera. The Reduser event was also a great meeting place and learning forum.

But also at IBC I saw and purchased all my Red add-ons, matte boxes, tripods, motion control etc. etc.

The absence of Red would be sad - but certainly wouldn't stop me from going.

This is all from a European perspective. If I was based in the States, it would apply to NAB and I'd definitely be there.

John

Hopefully this is a one year hiatus and Jim will decide to bring Red back for NAB 2010
